About This 360-degree panorama gives a quite inadequate impression of the rather fine modern architecture. Look at the previous picture to get a more normal perspective... The four circular fisheye shots from which this panorama was stitched were taken from the "mound" (actually a fountain area) on which people are standing in the previous photo... Here, the "mound" is spread out all along the bottom of the panorama.

Yeah. I'm one month away from my last donation expiring, so they are reminding me of all the wonderful benefits of being a donor. This is one of my very first panoramas, with several technical defects, and nothing like as good as most of my later panoramas. I am quite sad to see it go up on the front page. It is not really at all representative... Thanks for letting me know, though. I now visit so seldom I would have missed it otheriwse.

Yes, Mary, that's EXACTLY what it's like! And if you download a VR viewer (I know a couple that will install themselves and not take up much space nor cause any problems), then you could view the original scene that way, and by choosing to zoom in (or out) you could see a small part of the scene enlarged, as with a tele lens, or a large area, even up to and including the original fisheye shot with all its original distortion... At the moment my fisheye doesn't quite cover 180 degrees vertically, so when you try to view a 360 x 180 degree (so-called "Spherical") panorama, you see two small holes, one in the sky and the other under the panorama head. I'm still working on that. [grin]

Congratulations on DOD. Very intrguing technique. It is sort of like standing on a turntable in the middle of the scene and being turned slowly so as to see all the different directions.

Hi Roger,

pretty cool stuff my friend. sorry for the long absence. The image shows the scene very well in the pano style. great to have the rounded buildings plus the textures on the floor. I get a "wrapped" feeling.

best wishes,
Thilo

Thank you, Hugo. One thing with stitching 360-degree panoramas, you can choose the center point for the flat display to be anywhere around the circle, and I usually (but not always) go for symmetry. It's funny that people like this one. It's my least favourite and I almost didn't post it. Did you look at the preceding photo, which gives the true geometry of the situation?

Roger Williams Roger Williams   {K:86139} 3/25/2006
Thanks, Rina. It's nice when an oddball panorama makes it to the front page! With so many people posting good panoramas these days you'd think they'd have an occasional "Panorama Award." But you really need to see these in VR mode, so you can zoom in for the details without being distracted by the distortion.

Thank you, Joćo. I much prefer some of my other panoramas, but for some reason they chose this one! Still, not complaining...

Koneejiva Roger son
It seems to me either you served in Iran long time ago during old government as ?? or married with one of those beautiful loyal Iranian lady who knows how to treat and please you!
In either cases, you should now by NOW that you do NOT eat all of these different kind of foods ALL TOGETHER unless you would like to commit suicide! and go to a beemarestun!!
ANYHOW, if one day she left you for better dowry to another man, then remember me that I gave you the following link about how to COOK IRANIAN FOOD e besyar khushmaze hastand.

http://www.farhangsara.com/foods.htm

Also I give these beautiful sexy red flowers to you in bahane Eid-e Norooz.

Dear Kamiz, thank you. I feel the same as you about this picture.

I will be thinking of you when I celebrate Norooz on Friday the 24th (a little early for Sizde Bedar, of course). But we plan to have:
Salad Shirazi, Salad Olovie, Lubia, Mirza Ghasemi,
Khorak Jegar, Mast o Esfenaj, Kuku Sabzi, with the main dishes of Chelo Kabab Kubideh, Sabzi polo,
Mahi, Khorak Gusht, Juje kabab, Saffron rice
Khoresht fesenjan, Shami kabab, Eslamboli polo, all with Nan.
And for desserts (if we still have room!)
Mast o Moraba, Kompot angir, and Ferni.

I hope I didn't make any spelling mistakes... This will be a buffet, so only small tasting of each dish. Happy Norooz to you!!

John, if you use a VR viewer, you can do exactly that. Pan around and zoom inside the image all with normal perspectives. That is how these images SHOULD be viewed. One day, perhaps, on Usefilm...

People react fairly well, as I am never pointing the camera at anyone in particular, nor looking through the viewfinder, just obviously pointing the camers towards the four points of the compass. Some will duck to get out of the FOV, which doesn't work, of course! [grin]

My trouble with panoramas is that I keep trying to unfold them into a perspective that I think I would see. You are going through a lot of work to get these fine results. Congrats on DoD. How do people there react to what you are doing?

Roger,

This is a brilliant image! So much depth, and little openings to explore!

I *love* the trick that's going on with my eyes trying to uncover the mystery of why the people are so small against the foreground person. It's that mound, and it's amazing how the perspective hides the top of it. SO well done! And very well composed.

Everything about this you must be proud of! You did a great job w/ the symmetry!! I love the balance it adds (even though the weight is in favor of the right side of the image...but the fact that you captured that foreground person looking to the right balances it right out!)

I can see this on a museum wall!

cheers, and congrats on the DOD award! You have inspired me once again!

Another brilliant post. The great thing is that these images succeed on their own even after the "Wow!" factor of the technical achievement is over. Great job . . .

Best wishes,

Hi Roger, Very strong panoramic view, with the curving structures. I like the fact that you build the composition on a rather symmetric base, it fills the image beautifully. Very cool indeed, I have to agree with Jim, probably my favourite of your 360 series and I believe this is a very well deserved award!

Cheers,

Hugo

Excellent Roger! This is a real eye-catcher with that hexagonish pattern on the sidewalk as well as that yellow lighting inside the doorways. This is probably my favorite of your 360 series.
My hat's off to ya.
