About Arba'een (اربعين, Arabic "forty") is a Shi'a religious holiday that occurs forty days after Aashura, the commemoration of the martyrdom by beheading of Husayn bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad which falls on the 20th day of the month of Safar. Husayn and 72 supporters died in the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (680 CE). Forty days is the usual length of the time of mourning in many Islamic cultures.

The occasion reminds the faithful of the core message behind Husayn's martyrdom: establishing justice and fighting injustice, no matter what its incarnation -- a message that strongly influenced subsequent Shi'a uprisings against the perceived tyranny of Umayyad and Abbasid rule.

In the first Arba'een gathering in the year 62 AH, Jabir ibn Abdullah, a companion of the Prophet, was one of the people who performed a pilgrimage to the burial site of Husayn. Due to his infirmity and probably blindness, he was accompanied by Atiyya bin Saad. His visit coincided with that of the surviving female members of the Prophet's family and Husayn's son and heir Ali, who had all been held captive in Damascus by Yazid I, the Umayyad Caliph. Ali ibn Husayn had been too ill to participate in the Battle of Karbala, but looked on from the sidelines.

The city of Karbala in Iraq, the third holy place of Shi'a Islam, is the center of the proceedings where in a show of humility, many crawl through the streets of the city while others fall on their hands and knees as they approach the Shrines of Husayn and his brother Abbas ibn Ali.

As with all Muslim religious holidays, Arba'een follows the lunar Islamic calendar, not the Western solar Gregorian calendar. Arba'een fell on 31 March in the year 2005.

You are correct Kambiz, many innocents are falsely accused, and sometimes hurt based on the heinous actions of people who resemble them. Racial profiling is the horrible side effect of having people that look like you do terrible things. An unrecognised truth is that as a caucasian male I too am "profiled". People view me and many times assume that I am something that I am not, such as being predjidiced against people of color or of other Religions. Perhaps it is all part of God's plan, if life were too easy to live it would not be worth it? Take care.

Thank you Tim for your comment.

. . . . , and still many innocent people were stopped by security forces, police forces just because they have mustache & beard (Mahasen), or observing Islamic Scarves.

I like the vibrant colors of the banners both in the fore and rear of the photo. They make a wonderful contrast with the muted colors of the surrounding buildings. Aside from the photo I appreciate the link and lesson concerning the History of Shi'a Islam. (A friend from Tehran first introduced Aashura to me) It seems we all have a history of violence in our past, regardless of our geographical or religious upbringing. Rest assured that not all people in the US believe that all followers of Islam are terrorists! And many do understand the many differences between the Arab and Persian peoples. Thank you Tim

hello kambiz,

i do not agreew ith any religion, because i believe none ist right. every religion is just a way of trying to explain the world, ther question of where we come from and where we go to.

so i am very impressed of people, who accep a religion as the truth.

fine picture indeed.

yours

frank

Amen my friend, somebody had to say it loud and clear! Amazing how they always manage to circumvent what they promised and lead whole lands to new catastrophical events, which could have been avoided with just a little effort.

"For politician, is another story" - this statement is compact, direct and clear!

Your are perfectly right for your second paragraph.
I always include people.
In that case there was a narrow corridor between those posters and myself. In order to take the image I had to go on top of a higher ground. That's why it bcame like that.
Also I believe people are people no matter where they live on this mother earth.
I believe we should RESPECT them.
For politician, is another story.
We, people suffer from their b***** decisions and actions.
They put the children of their country in the war front while they enjoy having good life, good food, and adultry with their beautiful secretaries (only few).

Wonderful for two reasons (that perhaps are immediately connected to each other?)

The first is that you connected documentary and art. I see only that perhaps a bit more of the people would add to the scene - what do you think?

The other is that you share your culture with us, making it possible for us to get a more wholistic view and not having to rely on the news in tv, which of course are always very very objective ;-)

So could it be, Kambiz and all other friends out there, that arts and beauty and even vrazy photography bring us in touch much more and much better than any politics? (Add maths for me, pleeeeeease ;-))

Keep that up, Kambiz! Cultures should not isolate themselves and divide people, but keep exchanging views and opinions. Open minded and open hearted.
