About Shallow DOF so I cropped to the best part with Photoshop and added a blue filter. Minimun sharpening. This came out so well that when enlarged I could see the trees and my van upside down through the droplets and also my reflection which was right side up since it was a surface reflection

Very nice Tom!!!

Great image, and wonderful composition!

I love the blue tone. It adds brings great balance to the overall image. Helps pull the dew drops out, and most certainly give your something 'blue' to hang on the wall!

I love the detail that your catching in the drops, and most of all, in the web itself.

Very well done, and very well deserved POD! Congrats on this fine work!

cheers,
-joel

I think this is stunning Tom ~ the soft-focus blue tones are a perfect backdrop against such sharp drops ~ congrats to you! susie

Thanks for the detailed info, Tom! After seeing the original, I completely agree with you about the choice of blue toning. Not that the amber was a huge distraction, but once you pointed it out my eyes went right there!

Two things I've learned from this image 1) to consider adding color tones in certain circumstances, and 2) to keep my eyes peeled for very tiny spider webs. Sometimes I look for something the size Charlotte might weave, and miss the smaller beauties.

And a BIG congrats for Photo of the Day!! Well deserved!

Thanks for the kind words Mary Sue as well as everyone who offered their critique as well.

I have attatched a copy of the image after it was cropped and prior to adding the blue filter.

The background was more or less bare trees and sky but the amber at the lower left and a bit on the right is some fall foliage still hanging on.

That was my reason to look for some camouflage. I felt the amber tones were to distracting from the web itself. The blue overpowered it well and gave what I felt was needed.

This is more than you asked for but when I went out first thing in the morning the air was saturated with moisture. It was VERY misty, you could see the mist in the air currents. The webs had been built the prior night between the ballisters of the handrail leading up the steps. This web, in it's entirety was no more than 6 inches wide and very very fine.

As a slight breeze cleared away the mist it took the webs as well.

Hi Tom, Dont think the dew on a cobweb theme can be captured much better than this. It Very good crop, and a great background tone... Not much to critique here, I think. I rather like the contrast and changes in tone of the background compared to what Jim suggests. The tonal variety in the background matches better this way with the refraction in the droplets. Great shot, and a very good crop!

Cheers,

Hugo

Some of the previous critiques suggest that the background could be more interesting, but I like it just as you have it. The blue is a good choice. I'm curious, though...what was the background's original tone? These spider web images can get a little 'seen-one-before', yet the structure and sharpness (and probably the blue tone) make this one dynamic.

I must admit that I've tried this before and have not achieved anything so interesting. Good job!

.......sorry to hear you had rolled the Van Tom, just kidding, this is a great piece of work, the blue filter gives a surreal quality to the subject.....I was just messing with one of these webs today, when I get back to work I'll send it to you...you have made a super sharp, magical photographic image......well done, enjoyed it. cheers, david.

An impressive shot. I like the way the sky in the drops creates highlights, but prefer those drops where the reflections are more abstract. The blue backdrop also works very nicely.

Maybe a bit more DOF/sharpness would have been better, but what an extra ordinary shot. Love it.

You want critique? ok! ;)

I think back side of shot can be more interesting...
Where is spider???? ;-)
Light is not so interesting. May be more of shadows make this shot better?
;-)

A similar photo was posted earlier today. You may want to keep an eye out for it. Judging this soley as an individual photo... I love the clarity of the water droplets through out the image. It would be nice if the background were a little more uniform and had less competing highlights, but that is in an ideal world and we all know that is seldom the case. I'm very impressed by the sharpness. Beautiful capture.
