Hi Ina,
I think when we first start fooling around with Photoshop with these kind of images, most of us just naturally go to the eerie side. (it's a little easier to cover up mistakes or faults, after all, anything can happen in a dream...right!)
It looks like you have reached the step now, where you are not satisfied with covering up your mistakes with special effects, if you know what I mean.
I'm amazed at how much there is to learn in PS. I seem to pick up something every time I use it. I have a very old version myself, so I have been told that many things I do, I do the hard way :)
I consider myself very much a beginner when it comes to digital manipulations. But learning fast:)

You did a wonderful correction, I wish I could send you the entire file, but I realize from the crop how well it looks, even with everything else being less bright, it looks like a wallet picture! Hi Ina. It is difficult to manipulate images in certain ways in PS. But I downloaded the image and reduced the contrast quite a lot. This had the effect of bringing quite a bit of detail out of the shadows on her face and uniform, which gives the imression of a softer light, similar to what you see in the background image. (see attachment) Since I didn't have the original layered image I had to make the contrast change to the entire image. You would just change the Nurse layer, of course. You might want to also reduce the brightness (or not) but I just changed the contrast setting. I don't know if this helps out, but I thought I'd try.

Whoa! glad you explained the woman as i first thought there was some place lost in time..LOL..as you know,i love fog pics,too,so this is very appealing to me...love the darker hues and contrast level...creative combo of images...wish i had her posture and thus less spine probs!.....regards,gayle

This is really cool. I can't belive how this nurse blends in with the background so well. Nice and eerie again. I think you may have something aginst nurses. Nurse Cratchett must have given you a big huge nasty shot when you were younger and you haven't got over it yet and this is your way of expressing the pain? LOL Very good work here again.

Dear Ina, I watched all three creations with the fog and I finally can say that I favour THIS one. The wood is less busy, more airy and the fog wraps the scene around like a veil.Even the lady at right looks better, I like her hat!Maybe the presence of the small dirt road covered in snow gives a touch of reality to the shot, making one forget that it is a composite work. And the lady seems to be just on the point of choosing which way to go, so we also have an idea of movement in here.It looks extremely beautiful in panoramic, all the subdued colours become alive! An exceptional creation!

By the way, I still think you're past Pampers stage as well. The fact that you know what a layer IS and know how to manipulate one, immediately puts you into the Pull-Ups stage :)) Seriously, a beginner-intermediate would be categorised as someone who knows how to open PS, can resize or crop an image (just barely) and can save it in 'My Documents'. lol...

Wow, Ina. Terrific!! It has a little bit of the feel of one of Terry Gilliam's cartoons in Monty Python, but not at all ridiculous. The composition with the irregular path running across the picture like the river of time, is particularly nice. Well done!

Rina, last October I discovered layers :) I'm at the Pampers stage.
Here, the most difficult part was going back in time to take the picture of the nurse, but luckily she was on a lunch break, and we strolled into the woods just behind the hospital where she worked :) Then I came back and did some minor cropping - LOL - I hope nobody reads this :)))

Oh Ina, don't doubt yourself. You're way past beginner to middle stage with PS. In fact, I will certify you now... Ina Nicolae, you are officially ADVANCED Level - Photoshop. Period. No returns. Infinity + 1 (don't really know what that means, but I've always wanted to say it):)) I'd give my 'right eye-ball' even just to be able take as good a picture as you. Then, to have the skill to add an element that not only blends flawlessly but is in keeping with the tones/light/shadows and mood as well... pure brilliance my girl.

These montages or whatever they are called are just seemless Ina. Nice job with the colorizing too. It still has a little mysterious feel to it, but certainly not "ghostly".

The pano has to be over 1200 pixels wide and no more than 600 tall (but I tried 600 and didn't work, so I keep mine at 598 pixels high). The key is to have a 2:1 ratio, or more. For example 1200 pixels wide x 598 pixels tall is a ratio of 2.006 :1 - you can use more than 1200 in length. I have a couple that are 1900 and 1400. Still the height can be a maximum of 600 (599, 598 or less).

Hi Joel, you do photoediting for a living? Wow, no wonder you know so much about this stuff. I'm not sure I know what "crushing" or "flushing" the blacks means - is it getting them to absolute black? I used a low resolution B & W photo of the nurse, and then colorized her. As you probably saw, the face and shirt have a stronger side lighting than a normal foggy day would give, but I had no idea how to even out the lighting without making the face look flat and lose more detail.

Ina.. just 'cause I love black values... hope you don't mind, I took your image, and what you see here is what I did to add a weee little blue green into the deep blacks of the nurse, and balanced the blacks of the trees around her. The blown out look is my monitor at gamma 4. (just like setting your levels middle number to 4.0 in PS). Note her coat against the screen rt tree in your original on the left, compared to the right. When the gamma is dropped to normal.. looks perfect.

Very nice composite! Amazing how well the perspectives line up. The lens used to capture the nurse was longer than the one used for your background, but by placing her to the side, keeps your eye from looking straight down the line, avoiding paralax. (ie, she wont work over the stream). I'm not usualy a fan of composited photographs, but because this looks so real (and that's what I do for a living), this one caught my eye. Very nice job! The one thing that it needs is the deep blacks in the Nurses dress needs to match that of the black values of the trees surrounding her. A happy medium can be reached by either crushing some of the black to 'black' in the trees, or flash the very low end of the nurses dress. I did have to do the blow out gamma test (as I at work, with my crazy work linux box). I boosted my monitor to gamma 4.0, as I do with real production shots, and I was able to see that the nurse has pure blacks with 0.0 value. Anywhooo! Beautiful image! ..i'm just a stickler for mathcing black values! It's the one give away that something is lifting away from the rest of the plate.
Love to see a whole series of these! Well done!

Hi Mark, I think I'm doing better with these figures as I colorize their faces, they don't look as much as ghosts :) I realized the lighting on her face and shirt is very strong, and I tried to get it toned down, but didn't quite manage, I need to learn some new PS tricks! I tried desaturation, brightness, contrast, even levels. The only thing I didn't try was to add a different light source, which I know is available, but I'm not familiar with it. Everything I tried made the face darker, and the eyes disappear, and still that contrast was there, while her face started to look like old leather. I wanted to post a corrected version, but I haven't really been able to produce one. At night, on the monitor the contrast with the face is even more accentuated than it was when I posted it. This is a good exercise, though :)

Excellent Ina! I like this one best of this series. The nurse is alive and quite present in this shot, and clearly seen. I like the detail in her image, especially the gloves and uniform. I also like the background shot with the road leading down the hill and into the woods. It leads me into the shot and also makes me wonder where the road goes and if the nurse is following it...
One suggestion, the light on the nurses face is a little more direct than the diffused lighting of this foggy scene. She might integrate a bit better if the facial color were desaturated a little bit, or perhaps darkened just slightly with the brightness adjustment on her layer. On the other hand, I don't think you want to lose any definition as the details of her layer place her definitely in the scene. It's a very fine line I guess.
In any case, a great result here!

Ahhh....the Ghost and Mrs Muir. Why is that so many of your images remind me of movies? :)
This one particularly reminds me of that movie as she wore the same era of clothing and the scenes were cold and the fog depicts the ghost of Captain Gregg to me. I like how the path of snow carries me into the forest. It's almost like the woman is contmeplating whether to take the path or go the other way. Perfect tones for such a scene. Very moody and yesteryear. Great work Ina.
