Ina,

Thank-you for taking the time to explain how you did the lighting on your photograph. I will have to keep this technique in the back of my mind for future shoots. Again Thank-you.

Best Wishes,
Chuck

Wow Mark, thanks for such an in-depth comment! I studied your work, to be sure :) before I set out to do these. I also kept in mind your comment about the grounding, which in others, unfortunately it may not be present. I started by using a light color table cloth for backdrop, but soon realized it was a bit too light. Now I'm using a dark color background, and as I correct the colors, it "disappears" - and so does the grounding.
In retrospect, most likely I'd use two backdrops: a dark one for the vertical, and a lighter one for the table, or insert some other surface under the tray (I don't have a piano, nor a nice reflecting woodgrain).

The level of saturation was dictated by my previous entry, where there is too much color, even though I like it, desaturations unifies it more, and it adds an aged look.
My aim is to make them more complex, I've been using about 12 objects now, and I'm only limited by the lack of sunshine and cold weather outside.

The old masters still lifes always had meaning built into the object selection and arrangement, it wasn't just visual planning. I haven't got any meaning in mind, but I'm sure that with careful planning this can be achieved, as much as you did with the books.

Thanks again, I'll post a few more this week, I just want to catch up with my comments, so I won't post anything new today. Great to hear your thoughts! Best regards, Ina

A fabulous still life! This is a lovely combination of the organic and non-organic objects. The smilarity of shape and texture between the shell and the canteloupe allows the shell to serve as a bridge between the organic textures of the calnteloupe and grapes to the hard non-organic textures of the tray and vase. The dried flower stems serve a similar purpose, and also coordinate very well color-wise.

I think the arrangement of these objects is very very clever. My eye travels a cricle from the cantaloupe, to grapes, to shell, to vase and flower stems, and back to canteloupe. Each element in that chain seems to evolve the pattern of texture and shape in the circle. Am I seeing things? As I write it is seems that I am over-analysing here, but that's how I'm seeing it.

I also think that the edge of the tray with it's beaded silver pattern serves as an effective containment for the arrangement, which allows the fabric underneath the tray to have it's own separate texture, apart from the main arrangement, even though there are interesting similarities in color. There is a grounding effect on the arrangement created by the heavy tray, and also by the darker color of the fabric. I think the fabric color exerts a lot of unnoticed influence here.

The level of saturation here is an interesting choice. It seems to bring the elements of the arrangement together by making their hues less dissimilar somehow. And the desaturated color gives it an older, 19th century fine art sort of appearance, somehow. I myself would have mistakenly gone for the brighter more saturated colors, then not understood why the objects did not flow together! You made great choices for subtlety with this! A fave.

Mark

Hi Elisa, you're right, I should have picked that one out, but I didn't see it at the time. It's a bitof hit and miss. I notice things only when they're on the screen, and then it's too late :) LOL, I have to work fast, the sun is in and out on the balcony where I have my setup. Last time, the whole "still life" fell off the little table - the crystal vase, the pickle jar, and another jar. Luckily they didn't break :)
Hugs, Ina

LOL, Ina ... I was unsure and asked my hubby´s opinion of what they were; I have to blame him, of course :) No wonder the "extra" one is almost floating in the air!

Thank you very much dear Robert! I've been interested for a long time in art history and still lifes, I just get to do my own now! I have to wait a bit more till spring when there is more sunshine, because I shoot outside, on the balcony, and many times in winter the lighting is not right, and the wind is blowing. But I managed to shoot quite a few. My best wishes, Ina

Hi Ina! Love the different shapes and distinguished tones here! Stunning clarity, especially the peel of the melon looks awesome. There´s one thing I´d like removed: the plum at the top right of the group, just to add some more space. Yet, as Ann said, a masterful image! *hugs*

Thanks very much Ann! I love the "tropical meets romantic" connection! I brought a couple of shells from Keys in Florida, I don't know if you've been there - they have an amazing assortment of shells. This one was hard to photograph, it was very shiny. Great comment, as usual, I enjoyed very much reading it! I hope to post a few more still lifes with my favorite almost rotting "rockmelon." And yes, there is a great similarity with the rotten pumpkin - LOL! I would love to have a real lizard in there, maybe I'll go find one! Hugs, Ina

Ann Nida Ann Nida   {K:45248} 2/13/2006
Now why am I reminded of Halloween and a rotting pumkin? I sure hope a giant lizard didn't leap out at you to get to that fruit. LOL

An excellent and very creative still life Ina. It has a mixture of old and new here. The tones and dried roses in the vase are quite nostalgic in theme yet the full colour of the melon (oh and just to throw another alternative into the mix we call that a rockmelon in Australia) to me along with the shell gives a quite modern look to the image. Yes for me it has a tropical meets romatic mood to it. I enjoy the nice play on lines here with soft flowing curves in the round shapes and strong verticles in the vase, bold horizontals in the shell and let's just throw in some great textures for good measure. All great ingredients for a delicious recipe to create the masterful image you have here. Well done Ina.

Cheers - Ann :)

Thanks Dave, my interest in still life is to put together some traditional objects with some that are a bit "odd" - although the shell is not as odd - I'm thinking what else I could use. Today I shot a few more with a set of vintage binoculars :) Best regards, Ina

Thank you very much Chuck, I'm sorry I'm usually slow with comments on weekends.
I'm using only natural daylight, no lamps and no flash. I set the objects on a silver tray outside in my balcony. I use a tablecloth for backdrop - from my experiments with my objects a dark color works better. I like to use reflective surfaces: glass, metal, shiny things, and I arrange them in such a way as to avoid strong highlights and strong shadows. I have found that a bright overcast day is not too bad, as long as there is a bit of warm light. Bright sun washes off the colors, and grey days make the colors dull. So I wait for the time when the light is bright but not full sun - that's all :) Thanks very much for your comment and question, Best regards, Ina

Thanks very much Davide, that's a great analysis, very very true, I realized that my house is full of "props" - so I'm using them, even today I did a few with an orange. If honeydew is "melone", what is the Italian word for "watermelon"? - the red one. I'm soory I've been very slow with my comments, all this picture taking is keeping me busy :) Best regards, Ina

Hi, Ina!
very classy, my friend!
I love the counterposition between the left and the right part;
on the left, the dry rose in an empty bottle and the empty shell

on the right, the juicy honeydew (melone, as we call it in italy) and the velvety grapes

dry Vs. juicy...hard Vs.soft and so on...

I agree on what Rashed wrote!
very well done!
Ciao

That's one bizzare still life (and I mean that as a compliment) and the lighting, particularly on those hard reflective surfaces, is very well done
