About Just a very short walk north of Custer's Last Stand is a relatively new Indian Peace Memorial. Inside the stone circle are wall plaques depicting the valor of the Indians during the battle. Several tribes have their own panel; many listing the names of their dead from that day. There are reproductions of Indian drawing showing the carnage from the battlefield... soldiers of the 7th with their limbs and heads removed. Some drawings show mutilation to the bodies. That is not what surprised me. “War is all hell,” as Sherman said. What surprised me was the peace memorial, inner circle, had a wall dedicated to the Crow Indians who fought and died June 25, 1876. To have a peace memorial one has to include all people. The Crow who fought and died in this battler were fighting with Custer and the 7th against the other Indian tribes... and yet they have a wall showing their honor and spirit in the middle of this place. It was a humbling moment for me...
