You nailed it Audrey. More than documentary, I posted this one because I was touched by the elegance of the pose. Thanks for the toughtful comment.

Hi Christian, To my way of thinking, viewers will react in one of two ways with this image. There are those who may think this is too weird a pose and not at all the usual beautiful bird shot, hence 'nice' and move on. To others, its exactly this unusual pose that give interest to stay longer and try to work out what on earth he is doing and at what angle could the photographer be to get this shot. Thereafter, one takes in the pin sharp beautiful shades of his feathers, his reflections as well as the calm water movement and colours. I had wondered if the blue waves (upper right) is necessary - but yes, it echoes the bird's breast and the blue of the sky in the water beautifully. I see you and Don think this is a fishing pose, might it also be he's sunning himself, I wonder? Whatever he's doing, its nice to see interesting and unusual angles. (writing soon:)

Image tout en finesse et délicatesse, tel ce héron qui semble s'étirer d'une aile à la douce lueur montante du soleil. TRès belle photo Christian.. J'aime beaucoup Amicalement Fabrice

This is really unique, Christian. I have never seen a similar pose by a bird (except maybe intermediate wing movements). He is waiting to catch a fish while you have caught him with your lens;) Very good!
Regards, Markus

Exactly Don as we would do, but I was suggested the other explanation I posted by a dedicated birder.
