Hi Rebecca...Just had to return to this one to comment on your about, because this image is perfect for it. You say: "I realized why I love photography so much. It makes you go out into the world and look for the beauty, the colors, the sorrow, the happiness. It makes you see the world in colors, in black and white. It opens your eyes and your heart." VERY WELL SAID! It reminds me of the presentation I made yesterday to two 1st and 2nd grade classes at a local elementary school. The joy you speak about showed on their faces as they considered all the visual props used to demonstrate the role photography plays in our lives today. They were shown images of every type from various sections of the newspaper, advertisements, Time Magazine (some of them could identify Bush on the cover), National Geographic, Smithsonian, Life, and...last but not least, my own personal slideshow. They seemed awestruck over the magnitude and scope of photography today -- how many photos are produced on a daily basis in every walk of life. And by the end, it appeared that 40 young photographers just joined our forces. Watch out UF -- they'll be here soon!!!

Great shot, I don't think I have ever seen them gather like this. I guess a mud puddle is an ideal watering hole. Beautifully composed, great detail and nice lighting. Alison

Rebecca, I saw this same phenomonon at Shanendoah National Park (Sugar Hollow)my guess was that the black butterfly is the female & the males are doing a mating dance. But, that's just a crazy guess. Nice shot, well done. Dottie

Stan, this is the same road leading into the field where the picture " The Outcast" was taken. The road goes to a barn and a hay meadow. The road had a small culvert running under it, where water was flowing, a few flowers on the side of the road, but they all clustered here, like they were watering. There were many more than this, but I tried to get closer and many flew away. Thank you for the lovely comment.

Ken Alexander   {K:3905} 10/1/2004
Very nicely composed (with some help from the butterflies!) Including the one with different coloration really helps. A well-earned BIP, Rebecca.

Stan Pustylnik   {K:6768} 10/1/2004
Very, very nice result for full zoom. I've seen moments like this when for some unknown reason lot of butterflies come to create traffic at tiny spott at water edge, while entire area near water is not interesting for them. Any specific minerals at these spots? can't belive that minerals could be so different 5 feet away.... Awesome pic, Rebecca.

Wonder what they were all after or if it was just a butterfly convention. Beautiful unusual capture and congratulations on BIP my friend. Magnificent work!
