About Backlighting adjusted in PS and filtered in Neat Image, thus the soft effect. It was a very windy day, so there was a lot of noise and some blur in places where the trees were blowing. But I loved the shadows and composition, so I kept it. Not to mention, this is the love of my life, my son, standing there.

Well, John, Christine, Glenn and Neal have pretty much said all I had to say, too :) The filtering, and mostly the smoothing (and subsequent resharpening) have leant a really interesting 'plastic' quality to this shot - not in a bad way, mind you! It kind of reinforces the otherworldly, dreamlike feeling. I like your son's stance - very contemplative.

The shading gives added meaning to the figure standing there. As one who is new to photography, cheap camera and no photo shop, I am amazed to what can be done with a photo. I think I know what to ask Santa for this year. I love the feeling the photo gives. Del

I'm late again and all the good things have been said. I agree with them all. This is wonderfully moody and spooky. I think I see eyes in that tree stump in the upper left. Your son, though, will simply turn around and banish the spirits with a glance. A very strong image.

There is such an incredible mood here that in B/W with the stark trees and shadows could have been disconsolate and forlorn...but the blur, softened lighting and noise removal, instead, gives it a profound quality. Contemplative and peaceful not alone and lonely. It is quite amazing what some adjustments can do to turn the modality of an image. Your son's stance is strong not dejected. Excellent vision you had here Rebecca and it is wonderful how you made this work because your beloved son was in the photo and you were determined to make that shine through. I understand completely. Well done!
