About "The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give-and-take, just long enough for you to level the camera and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box." (Henri Cartier-Bresson)

excellent image.. you captured the look and feel of summer in the city. It almost looks like 2 photos in one (the kids playing basketball and the little girl walking) and each is completely different yet combines into one powerful image. The composition is excellent .. great work

Oh Cindy, I love her! This shot is like a movie scene, the little girl is the main subject of course, I like her pose and her bouncing feet, she?s really lovely, but also the background is very interesting, a multiple background to tell the truth, with different focus and lighting, and this is very original. You could be a very good director ;) Hugs Max

Hugo thanks for your insightful comments. Here's a bit more on background regarding your comments...I didn't crop the photo at all in honor of Henri Cartier-Bresson - he believed in full frame, no cropping. As well, the color shot was rather bland -- seeing the angle from shadow to light with only the hoop showing a subtle orange...girl was in silhouette and hoop players were basically white shirted, dark shorts...I had only seconds to focus on this really confident strided gal talking on her "cell" - I found this most in tune with the Henri project as he found shapes, linear movement very important within composition - and in BW those contrasts strengthen in my opinion. Keep stating your honest opinions - I find it very refreshing! Keep shooting my friend! Regards, Cindi

Hi Cindi, The tension in this shot is almost unrivalled. The shallow DOF, as well as the three levels of different action create a very strong atmosphere, almost unconfortably so. The unconfortable atmosphere is also (partially) induced by the centered set-up of the composition, which makes it powerful, but also a bit more static than I think the actual scene and mood calls for. As the balance is a bit focussed on the left side of the image, cropping a bit off the right hand side would've been an obvious solution, but then again, I think it would ruin the atmosphere completely.

I therefore think it's the slight unbalance of the composition that is vital to the atmosphere...

I wonder why you've converted this one to B&W, as I think the exact atmosphere of a downtown summer, hot and sticky, might've been stronger depicted in colour. It might fit better with ECB, but the purpose eludes me a bit.

Nonetheless a very good shot, one that evokes to be pondered about.... (which I like to do, so a "thank you" is in order...:))

Cheers,

Hugo

What I love about this one is the girls body language as she passes by. The dark shadowing creates a mood that would otherwise not exist. This makes you follow the lines of the shot. Fantastic.
Thanks for you comments on mine :)
