Hi Taran
Wasnt that hard to shoot as the dragonfly was quite cold and just sat for some time while I snapped away with studio flash!
As for film, this was probably one of the last film shoots I did.
Have been shooting with an EOS 1Ds and 5d for quite a while now.
I'm over film :)
Thanks for your fantastic comments.
Cheers

Nice dragonfly, great subject isolation. Bonus for using film... macros are hard enough when I have hundreds of frames to spare on twitchy dragonfly's... but Velvia! Mad skills.

Hi Brad
I found the dragonfly on a post outside the building where I work.
It was around 7.30 am and a really cold morning at that.
The dragonfly wasnt able to fly at that time due to the cold, so I brought it into the studio and it literally sat in that position for about 30 minutes.
You can tell that its alive as its supporting itself on its legs. Usually if the insect is dead or snap frozen the legs tend to curl in on themselves.
I have had some negative comments saying that the insect has been photoshopped in. But I can assure you that isnt the case.
I did do some poor photoshopping of the background in an attempt to darken the area around the wings. But due to my excitement (yes even after 28 years I sometimes do get excited by a photo)I posted the snap before I checked it on a decent monitor!!! :)
After I finished I took it back out to the same location and it shot off instantly.
Cheers and thanks for commenting.

Fantastic Shot, just a question how did yo uget the dragonfly to stay still?

  0

Salvatore Rossignolo   {K:13559} 2/23/2006
Super super strong! This shot really gives one a sense of the potential energy pent-up in this dragonfly. Moving yet standing still! Powerful !

thanks for ur replay, it is my 1st time to hear this idea :)

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 9/17/2005
Hi Moe
I found it outside on a cold day very early in the morning.
It couldnt move as it was very cold.
It did not move during the whole shoot, but when I released it outside it shot away instantly!
If the insect is too active I often cool them down by placing them in a fridge.
Sometimes I have to put them in a freezer as well!!
You do lose a few specimes this way tho :(

Moe Rabie Moe Rabie   {K:4390} 9/16/2005
it is perfect okay i got it u shoot it in studio and it is alive , but how can u make it stand !! do u live it free, i know it sound stupid , but it is beautiful anyways 7++

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 7/5/2005
No its not a composite.

This is exactly as shot. It was a live insect.

It was shot on a black piece of material but some of the thread actually came up as a grey in some ares.

Shooting with the big soft boxes tends to spill light onto the background as you cant really put barn doors or shades into a close up shot like this.

I cleaned up the background a bit and did a pretty poor job on it.

I didnt feather the selection around the insect very well, particularly at the tail end.

It was a case of actually getting too excited about getting the shot up on the site and I rushed it.

I have quite a few different angles of the same shoot if your interested.

Steve Williams   {K:1341} 7/5/2005
Ok.. no ringlight then. Tell me... Is this a composite? As it appears that the fly is pasted into the pic? thnx

  0

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 7/5/2005
Hi Steve

No I did'nt use a ringlight, they tend to produce quite flat light.

I used two studio lights, one with a soft box and one with a white umbrella.

Cheers

Steve Williams   {K:1341} 7/5/2005
Beautiful macro. Please tell me did you use a ring light for this?

Hi Davide,
Ok,my monitor is brighten than it should be,I know that. But, it also mean that you should be careful when you do some PS work. I can pretend that I can't see stained area, but what is the point of this website then?

[I noticed that comment like "great photo" is better than say something more.Sorry about that.]

Congratulations for the awards.

  0

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 9/6/2004
Hi Maja

I havent 'drawn' the background.
As I have tried to explain I had to 'burn in' some of the black areas as they appeared too light after scanning.
I accidentally posted an earlier copy which hadnt had the area under the left wing finished.
Burning in is a legitimate photo technique which goes back, oooohh ....probably only as far back as the invention of photography.
The fact that you can see the line actually means that your monitor brightness is set too high and needs to be calibrated as well :))

  0

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 9/1/2004
Dear Nick sorry to dissapoint you but the dragonfly is not "pasted on", its a live dragonfly sitting on black felt.
The reason I retouched the 'black' was that the area in question came up a lot lighter when I scanned it from the original slide.
As I said I posted an earlier unfinished version.
And again IT IS NOT A PASTED PHOTOSHOP IMAGE OK!!!!!
I'llsend you copies of all the other angles I shot if you dont believe me!!!!!!!!!

Hi David.

Noooo I'm all for it, if it helps the photo! - tho I must admit I'm a little confused about the extreme ratings (EC, SC and BIP) youre getting here. It's obvious that you have pasted the dragonfly onto the silk - don't get me wrong, it's nice work, but in my book a picture like this http://www.usefilm.com/image/479863.html should have recieved the kind of recognition you are getting here.

It's not an attack on you David at all :)

  0

David McClenaghan   {K:9481} 8/24/2004
Yeah luckily your the only one with an uncalibrated monitor :)
I only cleaned up a few areas on the original and accidentally posted the unfinished version.
Does that detract from the actual concept of the photograph or do you think that overall it may not be worth a positive remark!

He, he, he. Corse I bleedin well shot it in the studio with the same studio lights I use for portraits of people.... well its just another portrait isnt it? :)

I reckon there are some winners amongst that lot.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! This is an unbelievable shot!!! How are you able to get these shots amazes me mate! Did you actually pick this fella up and place him on a black sheet with a black background and then iluminate him from the bottom right with a special light? Or were you just lucky? Anyway, as they say.... the harder you work the "luckier" you get!
Did I say this was an awesome shot? :)
Congratulations on EC & BIP too!! Jeez! Talk about bagging the lot!
Well done mate!
Thanks for your tip of cutting that stage image down the middle. Sometimes you can get quality & quantity at the same time huh? ;)
Cheers
Alan

Hi Lori
I found it on a light/electricity pole on a very cold morning.
It was presumably warming up for the day so I was able to grab it in a plastic container and i shot it on a piece of good old black velvet.
It was amazingly docile and very co-operative.
