Yea but what a great shot it is, bird shooting can be very time consuming, but once you have your spots and pretty much no whats gonna be there the chasing is over, just a bit of a wait sometimes....
Take care....

Hi Jacinthe
Thanks for the comment.
The background is actually a very out of focus front yard of my neighbours :)
And if your not a photographer what do you do ?

Wow! 400mm F/3.5? That must be a biggy. Nikon certainly know how to make'em and boy, you certainly know how to take'em. It was the "Your best photograph" title that brought me to this image--I couldn't imagine anything better than that wonderful picture of the bike and rider flying through the air. But you're right. This IS the best. And that you could know the DOF effect you wanted beforehand and arrange to get it? wow, that's professionalism! Hat's off!!

Lori as far as I know its called a spotted pardalote. Sorry I'm not a bird 'nut' :)
Native australian bird that prefers cooler high altitude climate.
Always build their nests in tunnels on river banks or mounds of dirt in driveways. :)

Hi David!
I liked reading your info...yep, those birds will get you out of work anytime!
I LOVE THIS IMAGE! What a great photograph! Like the composition also.
Do you know what kind of bird it is?

Good work,

Lori :)

Considering I was combining deep shade with fill flash and an extension tube and a 400mm lens Im very happy with the DOF.
It makes the face and the straw stand out even more dont you think.
In fact, and heres the big one THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED IT TO LOOK LIKE :)
And Bill, yes the actual bird is about 1/3rd the size it appears in this image.

Your depth of field is almost too shallow because only the bird's head is really sharp. Your composition however is awesome! Great work.

Perfect pose, great light and nice comp. I'd just like to see it totally in focus (was this movement during the exposure?). I bet the live bird is smaller than this image.

Cheers - Bill

Thanks for all your comments.
Wanted to put it in the 'Gosh, darn cute' project but couldnt find it :)
This is a straight shot by the way.
No cropping at all.
As I mentioned in the details it was a 400mm lens with an extension tube.
So I was quite close.
