About A very old one where I was trying to separate the capital from the wall. I guess nit really the best result, isn't it? But I'd be glas to read any ideas about the rather fuzzy appearance. Is that already "clipping" due to overexposre on the white stone?

It was ondeed most probably the scan, Andre. Something went considerably wrong here. The image/scan is from some ago, when I used my Agfa easy scan (or whatever it was called) and of course I didn't have much idea about the tweaks and tricks. I can't exactly remember but most of the time I was scanning using the auto-settings, which may work in some cases but will surely fail in other cases. I guess this was one of the second kind. So, I think that I'll have to search and rescal this one, hoping that it was nit the image itself that was bad.

Thanks a lot for the supporting input!

Hi Nick,
It might very well be the scanning process on this one. I remember scanning some slides that looked very nice when projected on a screen. However, when I scanned them and sized them for web posting, I was very discouraged.

Exactly, Ian. I am still quite confused with this one.

Cheers!

The answer could be: They, why do you do the same sin over and over again, Fabio? But this could be the answer *only if* the problem was indeed oversharpening here.

It is clipping plus bad scanning Fabio. This is why it is so "fuzzy". BTW, I don't sharpen any images at all afterwards, but it seems that this fact didn't yet arrive to your monitor.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot Bubai, but fabulous it definitely isn't. It is somewhere between OK and problematic. But thanks to all good hints of the people, I think I know now the reason for its fuziness.

Cheers!

Hi Saad, and thanks a lot for the nice comment and the help to my question. So, I guess that this was it, at least for the most part of it, clipping by overexposure. I should have metered light differently, giving more weight to the brighter capital.

And indeed it is a crop from the original but with no resizing. I attached the original for Dave, and as we see it shows the same behavior.

Cheers!

It was indeed as you say on the oroginal, Aziz. But I didn't find it as good this way and so I tried a crop. I already attached the original for Dave, so perhaps you compare the two versions.

Anyway, cropped or not, it looks fuzzy to me.

Cheers!

I am glad you do, Yazeed!

I only wished it would be not as fuzzy.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the nice comment and the idea, Dave!

The original scan was 634x943 pixels and 300 ppi. Then I cropped it without resizing - that is, the 630x690 pixels of the posted image are exactly the same on the original scan. (I attached the original scan, scaled down to 504x750 pixels since no larger images can be attached.) So it can't be the result of scaling/resizing, but it could indeed be a bad scan.

If I remember well I scanned it using my old Agfa scanner which was not as good, and even worse was that at that time I didin't have really much idea about scanning techniques. On the printed image (10x15cm) the problem looks less critical than on the scan, which supports your idea too. It seems that as the original was not as good, my bad scanning amplified the problems even more. I guess I'll have to rescan it for a possibly better version.

Thanks a lot!

Original scan downscaled to 504x750 pixels

Hi Nick, welcome back, and hope everything is alright,
I guess this a crop from original,
the photo as seen is well composed, and with good perspective,if you think it is over exposed I guess it could be easily corrected, though I think it is of good exposure,my regards,
Saad.

very nice shot, If practically possible, it would be better to add to the top (wider frame from top) .

I like your idea and composition here, Nick! The "fuzzy" appearance might be from the scan, as it looks like the result you get if you use digital rather than optical zoom on a digital camera. Is it a large crop?
Dave.
