Hi Nick, Yes, I think it would work using mostly black in the background. It probably wouldn't have to be 100% black, but mostly black would definitely help when stitching the images together. Andre

But seriously, the main reason to post such problematic shots is for me the ideas and suggestions that might be posted by many people here - even if they suggest a merciless crop. ;-)
As about being too picky, well, I just demand the "impossible" in order to achieve what is possible. Being "elastic" with the own work is like taking away all possibilities to evolve. After all, possible is that which can be done immediately, impossible that which takes a little longer... ;-)

Oops, I forgot some photons, and as we all know, experiments should be described precisely for the sake of reproducible results! ;-)

Hi Andre and thanks a lot for the comment and the idea! It would be very interesting to stich this out of three or four individual exposures, each one at the optimum of some individual part of the image.
I also guess that the background would present the big difficulty then, but I play with the thought, that it could fit sufficiently well, if it would be dark enough. I think about the following: Ideal, absolute darkness, without any photon around, will be always black on the photo, no matter of settings on the camera, since there is simply no photon that hits the film or the CCD even after 1000 years. This is of course an idealisation that doesn't exist exactly, but only approximately. Now, let the background reflect (or emit) some few photons towards the camera. If they are hust a few of them, then all three or four individual takes will have a rather dark background, and the differences of some few photons more or less that hit the film or the CCD (according to the settings) might still be undetectable by the human eye.
So, your idea is likely to work well if I could make sure that the background is as dark as possible. Which makes me think that it would be best to capture all objects not against some wall, like for example on this photo, but rather against more or less total darkness, like for example a cloudy night sky, or even better some kind of a black absorber that is big enough. I attach a drawing of a possible arrangement with a black absorber - do you think it could work?

Hi Nick, You are right about the candle on the right being not quite right compared to the beautiful exposure on half filled glass. One thing you might try for interest sake is to take three or four different exposures of the same scene and stich the best parts together. This might be a little difficult because then the individual backgrounds would probably be too different to match well. The same sort of exposure problem happens when taking images of snowy landscapes (as you well know) Andre
