I also love Dictionaries, Etymology, WORDS in general... :) :) :)
So now... here's the "thing"...
The "meaning" for "pining" (as was the orgiinal title, but it seemed like a pun if you read the about, therefore changed to "languishing" as close as I could make that to the pining connotation...)
2 : to yearn intensely and persistently especially for something unattainable
And... if you look at it as a "story".. she could be wearing ANYTHING to "pine" in... The story could be that she has been dressed and waiting for her lover to arrive and has been waiting, yearning, longing... and he is not forthcoming. She feels jilted. But she is still dressed in what she was wearing when she believed he would come.
Now that's just one story. Either way, her shoes are OK. This is the "alone" project, and therefore she ain't gunna grab no attention from no-one... no-one around... we are only viewers of an image. If the story were "real" and she knew not that she was being observed, her footwear is perfectly suitable to pine in and not gain any attention from anyone.

Hehe. I think you misread me. No foot fetish. I admire the entirety of women. They's got many a yummy part and turn. Those shoes are hot. Very sexy. Seems if someone were pining:

seems if someone were pining, that someone might wear clogs or fairly plain sandals.
Those shoes demand. Demand attention.
Not that I think you have to wear frumpy footwear to pine, but she may get the wrong kind of attention wearing those shoes (I am here reminded of an Eagles song 'Those Shoes').
Ok, barefoot may have to be reserved for Forlorn or Bereft. But no hippies.

Now, perhaps she is wearing "languishing shoes".... lol!!!
She is not portraying being a bearfoot waif or hippy. She can still be languishing or pining whilst wearing shoes, boots or any other thing on her feet. The meaning of pining and languishing has nothing to do with remorse... it is more like a "longing".
This is more or less a fashion shot, James and the shoes (whether you like them or not) are part of her attire and match with the dark areas in her dress, the window etc.
Ah James... methinks I understand that you might have a foot fetish! LOL!

The title did occur to me as having more than one meaning... But she doesn't look exactly happy, does she? So I think the title is OK... :)
