I agree - could stand more contrast, however even using levels & curves in PS, was hard to get a better balance without blocking out the shadows or washing out the highlights.
It may look less contrasty on your monitor than mine, however. Hard to say. On mine it looks fine, but again, could stand a bit more.
Also important to note, I was in ~80 ft of water shooting with a 15mm (wide) and a strobe's only going to go so far. So you're naturally going to see darker areas where the strobe couldn't throw (and where the sun wasn't shining.)
One more important point: other divers. There were several just leaving this shot (and one just entering!) that kicked up a lot of crap off the hull.
To avoid this, I usually get geared up and in the water a good 5 minutes before everyone else. My buddy and I made it down the 80' decent line swimming into the current, to the stern. By the time I 'sussed up the shots I wanted to take and turned to head back and shoot, here come the other folks. Doesn't always happen that way, but a lot of times.
I shoot film underwater, and therefore plan my shots when possible, (like on a wreck) Otherwise you end up missing something good! (Like the time I had a Manta Ray circle directly over me in 20' - and I was set up for MACRO! He showed up on a shallow reef that rarely - if ever - sees big pelagics.)
When I hit the lottery I'll take out a private dive charter and can get nice clean shots. :-)

I think it's cool and spooky and I personally like grain.

Nice, but for my eye, the photo needs a bit more contrast to bring out some of the details. Perhaps it is my monitor, but the lighter grey seems quite graing.

How'd you know about that squid? I didn't mention it. ;-)

A wonderful shot. The grain adds much to the overall emotion of the scene. Reminds me of those movies where they are diving to a wreck to salvage treasure only to be met by a giant squid lurking in the misty depths of the sea.
