Hi Marcus! Personally I love this shot, especially the Moon is a great impact to the skyline, plus the details, lights and focality are exceptionally great, not sure of the FATURED CRITIQUE judgment, but for sure inferiority its very easy to distinguish. You’re a good sport Marcus, you did the extra mile! Regards, Harry

Marcus,
Excellent Night Photo. Living in San Francisco myself, I tend to hit the island during the holidays for the 'special' lights... But even without the holiday lights, it's still a wonderfull image. Congrats!
What time did you take the pict to get the moon in there?

This is a stunningly beautiful night shot, Marcus. I´ve already commented on Jinggoy´s panorama; great work by both of you! Since this is a CC post, I have one suggestion ... to crop off about 1/3 of the part on the right side of the moon, to make the moon less centered. The reflections in that area are not that colourful either. Of course, that´s a minor thing; breathtaking work!

Something different from you Marcus. These kind of shots are always interesting when using the time exposure as you did. I did a few time exposures of the Toronto skyline years ago from Toronto Island on Kodachrome. I'll have to dig them up and see if they are still any good. Andre

Thanks Robert, and thanks for reading my post about the CC, I am happy to see you are using it as it should be, Dont worry about the cops stopping you night shooting, but the thiefs... I do agree with your critique for the most part, as the light down the middle of the shot is not proper photography as it should be off to the side atleast a hair, The reflection is actually what i liked most about the scene LOL and I like to try to recreate as seen, so i guess this is what it looked like to me.... Thanks again..

Beautiful image Marcus, lovely conposition and colors with a rainbow effect.Since this is in CC and I read your forum post the only thing I don`t like is the sharp and bright vertical in the center of the image which could be toned down.As I told Jinggoy when the cops stop me for shooting at nights I will be blaming both of you!! LOL!! Take care Robbie

Thanks Jason for the very helpful critque, I had major problems this night as I forgot my tripod colar for the L lens therefore I had to use the 50mm, just under 100 would have worked best, Another mistake was forgetting the remote shutter release so I could not shoot at an kind of stopped down apps, i could see the shake through the viewfinder, This did start out as a daytime birding trip so I was lucky to have my tripod with me LOL. I typically do use most of your above mentioned technics when I have my sh.. togeather, this is actually not new for me but only looks as though. I do like my images sharp and the level really depends on the brightness of the shot. but you can speak with our Ausseeee chic buddy, as she did the ps work on this for me from the raw file. but I have to say taking city/landscapes after not taking any for 2 years is not easy and to get back to a level where you are or some of the better shooters will take some time, wheather or not I get back into in will remain to be seen. but all things considered I had a nice time and did shoot a nice exosure of the moon then the buildings then the water, just a bit too laze to work it out as this actually was a challenge by Jinngoy that I would not post a Scape, but next time i will have what I need and shoot/PP for the sky building and water seperatly. Take care and thanks for taking the time...

Hi Marcus, its time for my two cents worth. first thing i would of done is to take this a little bit earlier in the evening so to get good separation between the skyline and the sky. Second thing you could of done is to make the aperature smaller, mine are normally shot at between 15 and 60 second so an fstop of f16 to f22 is perfect and gives you a very sharp image. If you were after the moon in the shot as is this is a great job for PS, shoot for the moon then shot for the city then merge them in PS. Last thing Marcus it looks to be oversharpened, that is one of the things i found to be the hardest to come to grips with as at one point it doesn't look sharp then next its oversharp. what way do you sharpen your images? hope this hepls a bit mate Jason

Thanks for the excellent critique and ideas Todd, I have had experience with landscapes in the slightly distant past, and did use some of those technics, some of which Judi Liosattos taught me, but I didnt take enough shots in 1 place, was waiting to get above the bay bridge, but jinggoy who i was with, drives like a driving instructor, and wouldnt park anywhere it said no parking LOL.. other than that he is a really great guy! Take care Todd....

Hi Marcus,
This is a beautiful photo. That being said, I will add some comments because it is in the Critiquer's Corner. I don't have any experience with this, but I have heard of the technique. Have you ever considered a composite image? A seperate shot metered for the moon and combined with this shot would add real punch to the image. Perhaps even a seperate photo for the city lights to eliminate the glare and keep the reflection bright. I have to learn how to do that. My editing skills/experience is sorely lacking.
Nice to see you wandering from your preferred subject matter.
Todd
