Hi Rocky, thank you so much for your reply and your valid comments. I think some balance would be nice, the homepage which is tired and boring, carries a majority of old, nevertheless excellent work, by non donors to uf, this is what I am struggling to understand. kind regards, david.

Why is it that ONLY a current critique or a current photograph be the homepage feature? Especially, with the number of great comments and photos that have been archived here. With so few images or critiques being selected out of the THOUSANDS being posted in any given period, I would think there are still TONS of these to feature for recognition. Otherwise, why archive them? Regardless of how old an image or critique may be, if it’s "really" good, it’s still good. In fact, you might even say it has "stood the test of time" or is "timeless." Not that I’m saying that THIS image is. Just curious about the restrictions of this policy and having this image taken down so quickly.

.....love the puss, girls, but why or why are we featuring a critique that happened three years ago? and the talented photographer, who is not a donor, last posted in may 2008. kind regards, david.

Wow! I can't image a 32 lb house cat, Jan, but I'd love to have one. LOL! Mancoons are naturally large cats but Yabo's weight is mostly due to his girth than his height. :) He loves his treats and I just can't help indulging him. Thanks very much for sharing your story about Ninja and the nice comments. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Rocky-- somehow this one slipped by me until I saw Linda's comments on the front page. I certainly cannot top her comments but I can say that I, as a novice Photoshop user, appreciate your summary of the various treatments you made to the photo. Am a cat (and dog) lover too, and love big cats. My previous cat (Ninja-rest in peace) was over 32 pounds. Yabo, big boy that he is, is a handsome guy and I enjoy viewing your portrait of him. --Best to you, Jan

Rocky I just now got this comment, I am not getting notifications of comments so I'm sorry I missed this one. I'm glad you like my comments. I didn't even know my comment had been noticed hahaha...I'm glad you appreciate my words, and I appreciate yours. I do try to look at images and make meaningful comments. Sometimes it's hard for us all depending on time contraints, but this image was very easy to comment on. I just stated the facts, nothing more...your work is truly awesome!! Thanks for saying that about my photography, I wish it were true...but so nice of you to say it...:) Big grins...and giant hugs to you...:)

Hi Shirley, My photo class liked this version best as well.
Even though (for me) logic would suggest that an intimate, lo-key portrait would look better in B&W, I think the golden tones in this give it a certain depth that gets "flattened" in the B&W. Just goes to show you that logic isn't the best guidance when it comes to art. Thank you very much, Shirley, for your kind words. ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Hey looky-here! A Featured Critique! I'm not surprise your comments get recognized, Lin. You really take your time to look at an image and then articulate your detailed impressions so well. I think we all live for these kinds of critiques and yours are particularly gratifying coming from such a masterful photographer. Congratulations on getting noticed and thank you for such wonderful feedback about my image. Front-Page-Headline-Bold-Type HUGS for you! ~R

Oh thank you, James! I use Photoshop to post-process my images. Dodging and burning are old darkroom techniques where you control the amount of light from the enlarger to the photo-paper. In Photoshop this is much easier since you have Dodge & Burn Tools to adjust exactly where you want an image to be darker (burn) or lighter (dodge). It gives you very precise yet delicate control over the light in an image. For example, you can see a dark vignette in this image; this was simply using a large brush at 10% and lightly "burning" the edges. Some very soft doging was done on the lighter parts such as his eyes and the right side of his face to create a greater contrast of light. Thanks for the kind comments, James! ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Hello Roby! I love my cats too. Yabo is a real character. He's a Mancoon and has some wonderful swirl patterns on his coat. He's also a bit of a fat-boy (loves his treats). Thanks for the kind comments, Roby! Have a wonderful weekend. ~ Warmest regards, Rocky
