The following is a text related to this image.
About 70 kilometers from Kufa, in the desert of Karbala in present day Iraq, Imam Hussein and his followers found themselves surrounded by Yazid’s army, an army made of people who called themselves Muslims and followers of the Quran and the prophet, but were now after the prophet’s family to kill them. The hold-up lasted for eight days for the Imam and a small number of his followers who accompanied him during his journey as they were surrounded by an army of thirty thousand. Imam Hussein who was sure about the outcome of this war called his companions and explained them about the consequence of this battle and asked those who wish to stay alive to leave the camp. According to several documents, Imam Hussein even turned off the light so that those who really wanted to leave could leave the camp without feeling ashamed of doing so. Imam Hussein was left with only a handful of those who loved the truth and some of the Banu Hashim (Prophet’s descendents) - a total of 72 all together.

On the 9th day of the Arabic month of Moharam of the year 61 A.H. (1365 years ago), the last chance to choose between war and allegiance was again proposed to Imam Hussein by Yazid. Imam Hussein asked for a delay to worship overnight, knowing that he would enter the battle the very next day. The day after, the battle began.

Next day, the soldiers of truth fought bravely with their commander, Imam Hussein, till they were martyred one by one by Yazid’s order. Among the first people who lost their precious lives during this war were Imam Hussein’s two sons, one of them was a 6-month old infant. After Imam Hussein was martyred, Yazid’s army entered the Imam’s tents and burned everything and took the women and children as prisoners.
