Thanks Joffre, for the nice web sites !

and Thank you all for your comments on the photograph.

Russel: I selected the Log by making use of the Magnetic Lasso tool. Then i inverted the selection and de-saturated the picture so that everything else except the Log got converted into B&W .... i adjusted the saturation control so that some slight green was left in the trees because i liked it that way.

Dawna: I think you are right. Using B&W films is perhaps the way to go if one has to get nice B&W pictures..... i believe that the type of b&w film and the printing process will also control how the scene is rendered on the print......since i no longer have access to a dark-room, I have stopped shooting B&W now and am trying to utilize PS capabilities to make B&W pictures.

cheers
;-)

The building is reflecting the sun-light and also I increased saturation in PS @ +8 ....
I bracketed and this scan is from the slide which is 1 stop underexposed. In the other
slides, the building does not look as much pink.

Bill ... About the image being soft, I agree. The slide isn't sharp although I shot with a
tripod+cable release ... i must have messed up something

Dawna:

I took this picture at around 5.00pm. It was a very cloudy day and
direct sunlight was not available. I have observed over time that such
couldy conditions make the water shots look much nicer than those
taken in presence of direct sunlight.

Couldy conditions, circular polarizer (helped cut 1 stop) plus the
use of f/27 aperture to obtain the reqd depth of field helped slow the ss.

Yes Toni, I was at 28mm ... the smallest focal length i have ..... i tried a few different
compositions....the half-cut clouds did not look very good .... so i decided
to go with the clouds and gave up on the foreground greenery ...

Ah ... borivali national park.... my favourite haunt when I was in college
at IIT-Powai ...i sure miss the place

Have you sepia toned this picture or something ? ... i would have preferred the top
left corner of the picture to be a little less dark so as to provide more
definition to the tree branches there ... but that is just me ...

Michelle: I shot this one from the FDR Memorial Garden.
Right behind the visitor information center of the FDR Mem Garden is a set of
steps that leads you on to the walkway surrounding the tidal basin. I set my
tripod at the base of these steps.

Thank you for the comments guys.

Sai ... I haven't even looked at the slide :-) ... got the scans yesterday and
posted one ... will chek them out tonight if they are sharp.

Terrence: The horizon is not a straight line here but it is a curve around the memorial
and that gives an apparent tilt. While shooting I aligned the vertical with
columns of the memorial. I have a horizontal composition of the same
scene and I will post it sometime to illustrate my point :-)

yeah, I find myself thinking abt these things too debbie....what look shud I go for with water and all......well, in this case, I used f/32 to get a good depth of field and that necessiated large shutter speed....DOF dictated my choice... I bracketed but even the smallest shutter speed used make the water go silken soft.... )
