Stunning and very moody! Perfect angle of light on the moon and just the right amount reflected off the perfectly placed clouds. The moon can be a tough subject to shoot but you've made a very atmospheric picture here. Though your exposure is spot-on - shooting in raw may allow you a little more control without introducing noise in the darker areas. Great work, well done!

Tell me this is a self-portrait! If it is, you are every bit as beautiful, and more, as I thought you might be! Wonderful lighting, toning and an intimate pose. If this is a self-portrait, you've done a wonderful job in shooting and posing so well, if not, you've still done a wonderful job!X

Gorgeous tone, enhancing the menacing feel of the scene. If I'm to be very critical, I might have liked to see just a little more space to the left of the tree and I don't think the black border top and bottom is required. Very dramatic and pleasing shot, well done.

This is a very moving, emotional and story-telling shot. The panoramic crop works well, the tone adds drama to the brooding cloud and the cross makes me imagine some poor soul who's last sight might have been a cloud just the same as this.
Technically, the blown-out area between the rain and cross is a real shame (though it seems almost unavoidable) and I can't quite decide if the grain adds or detracts. Please don't get me wrong - I think it's a very powerful image. Good work!

I love this shot! It says 'hurricane' to me, although by your description it's not! I think the cold understated colour works brilliantly and you chose a perfect shutter speed/driving speed combination. Very good!

Thanks all for your comments. Dan; I wondered if someone would mention that. The horizon is actually perfectly straight (checked in camera and fine tuned later), it is a layer of cloud just above which gives the illusion of tilt. Thanks again.

Hey )
This reminds me of when I lived in Sweden for a while. There, the rapeseed grew in huge rolling fields everywhere, divided by deep green crops of potato and beet. Often I'd be driving, almost dazzled by the bright yellow expanse and stunned by its overpowering perfume scent. It may not be summer there, but this makes me feel summery!

Hi Robert,
This is a lovely shot with gorgeous light and great colour. It may well be just a trick of the eye, but it appears to lean ever-so-slightly to the left. It's also a bit soft and could benefit from some sharpening. Aside from that, it's a great scene - good work.

This is a lovely silhouette, I love the light showing through the windows and the warm orange of the sky. Please show me more! x

After uploading, the colours and brightness seem to look horrendous. It looks very rich on my calibrated computer but very washed out on this. If it looks crap to you, don't be deceived - it might not be!!! ;o)

Hi Chris, thanks for the comment. You're right, I could have uploaded a larger image, I was lazy and just used the same size as I use on my own website.

I know what you mean about the dark corner but it was actually due to the cloud formation at the time (and perhaps slightly due to the angle of the ND grad I used on the sky. The sun was setting behind me, about 45deg to the right and wasn't looking promising as the cloud was very thick. I spotted a strip of clean air just above the horizon so waited for the sun to pass through it giving about 5-10 minutes of beautiful raking light. The dark area is the edge of that cloud. I guess I could brighten it a little in Photoshop. The lens is a Super-Angulon and although I used a little amount of drop, it should be able to cover the frame easily without much fall-off.

I've not made any prints so far, I'm weighing up my options for scanning. I use an Epson 4990 but so far haven't found it deals with shadows particularly well. I'm wondering if sending the tranny off for drum scanning might be a better option. Any ideas? The flatbed produces a file ridiculously large (too large for my computer to handle at high resolution) and so given the processing power, a print at any size is possible, probably double that which you state. However, with the focus being slightly off in this particular image, I doubt it would be worthwhile this time.

Thanks again for your comment.

This is stunning Vincent! Calm, relaxing, eerie, mysterious - all those and more in one. Much as I usually try, I can't really fault it and nor would I want to. Sorry, no constructive criticism here, apart from 'keep it up'! Great work, well done.

Hi Ashley, it's similar to some ideas I've been playing with lately, I wonder if it's the same sort of subject. I like it but am slightly distracted by the black 'dot' which I find stops the eye from wandering deep into the big black hole. The other thing if I was to be really picky is the slightly shallow DOF, softening toward the lens. However, I know how tough it can be to work with and I'm still striving for perfection myself. It's good work though and if you're anything like me, you'll be coming up with stacks more too!

Spooky! Hi Bradley, been a while! I like this series, it's very moody and unsettling. Strange really as all it really is is old wood and brick. You've done a great job of conveying the feeling I imagine you had whilst in this place. Reminds me of a magazine article I saw a while back of a similar place. Good work fella - hope you're well.

Great sillhouette. Gorgeous colour to set it against. Reminds me a little of the film 'Apocalypse Now'. Good work.

Thank you all for your comments. The criticism is very useful and much appreciated.

This current series is based upon photographs of Plasma. Some are single shots or, as in this case, a composition of 4 or 5 images. I am developing a process within photoshop to produce this final result.

This is as I say, very experimental. Each one I finish seems at the moment to be giving me new ideas for the next.

Thanks again.

Hi Moe,

Thanks for your comments. 'Pushing' means having the film developed as if it was a faster-iso film. Therefore, I loaded Fuji Velvia 50, but set the ISO in the camera to 200. If this was developed at the films rated speed, the image would have been 2 stops too dark. Asking the lab to 'push 2 stops' developed the image correctly. The reason for doing this is that the Plasma moves very fluently, therefore the faster the capture, the less the plasma will blur. I could have just as well used a faster film if I had some at the time.

Push processing can reduce colour saturation and introduces more visible grain the further you push it. However, Velvia seems happy to be pushed at least to ISO 400. Remeber to clearly advise the lab that you require pushing and how much. I would only push if I had a need to do so though.

I hope this helps.

Powerful and chilling. It's only a childrens toy for heaven's sake, but you've gone and done what a good photographer goes and does - told a story, and a gripping one! Great moody work. My only criticism is that the doll might be a little too central but that's by-the-way. I keep looking at your images and thinking 'album covers' lately for some reason. Nice one mate!

Hi Brad,
I like this loads. You need to learn an instrument and use this for the cover of your debut album! Great effect - love it!

Gorgeous light and a very dramatic sky. I like how the ripples in the water disturb the reflection slightly. Very, very nice!

What a great idea! I love the stark lines and angles and the subtle gradation in tone as the steps go deeper underwater. Must have been tough getting the camera pointed verically down?! Great work, congrats.

I think this is brilliant. So often these things ruin a good landscape, rarely they make more than an 'ok' subject and rarer still, they make a stunning image in themselves. This one sits nicely around the latter. Full of energy, stunning colour and a very strong composition. Well done.

Hi,

Plasma-balls are a real fun subject to experiment with. Personally, I'd like to see the ball in focus, but perhaps that's just my style. Take a look at my portfolio if you'd like to see some of my previous attempts. Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Regards,

Dan.

Wow, I've just grudgingly ordered the *ist DS as I have some extremely expensive Tokina ATX Pro lenses currently not being used. Your image has cheered me up by it's sharpness and quality. I amnow looking forward to my new digital even more! Thanks.

Hah! Most people will do anything to avoid including an engine or a wing in their aerial shots - once again you've walked in the opposite direction and made it your subject. I do like the imagination and slight rebellious streak in your work, Brad. Good stuff!

Awadh, this is absolutely stunning. Composition is perfect, all the more amazing as I'm sure you had very little control over what the horses were doing. Lighting is dramatic and perfectly placed and exposed. I just love it, love it, love it. I'll take a look at your portfolio now. Great work, well done.
