OMG - you went on a seminar with Andre Gallant?!?!?!? I'm am SOOOOO jealous!! How was it? I've taken some classes based on his and Freeman Patterson's work. Is he working digitally now? Or both?

By the way, this is gorgeous. I have one of this technique with slide film in my gallery if you car to look - it's the one called "twin reflections". It got published in Photographic.

Hi Kim. This looks like the same flower as in my "Soft Summer Blooms". Someone told me it was a Montbretia - I don't know, I'm taking their word for it. Love the shallow DOF.

Oh, it's NOT a statue - this is wonderful. I love the light, and especially how it hit his face - there's that triangle! (I'm learning portrait lighting - I know that's your background) I also like the color - almost like a colorized B&W. It was nice meeting you in class, I've just begun to look through your portfolio.

Hey, I know this sculpture - never quite got a decent shot of it though. I like this one.

Hi Valentin! This is a double exposure. I set the camera in double exposure mode, then set the meter to underexpose by 1 stop. I took the first shot in focus, then the 2nd stop in the same spot (on a tripod) out of focus. For the out-of-focus shot, you should use the largest aperture (smallest F-number). When you change the aperture, remember to change the exposure. Your N80 has multi-exposure capability. If you're using a zoom lens, you'll notice that when you de-focus, the register changes. Your N80 has a grid screen, notice where things are near the edge of the screen, and use your zoom to put them back in register. This is one of my favorite techniques - I hope you try it.

That's great! A different (scary) take on a familiar sight. The movement is just perfect!

This is a slide montage. The reason the background has such different coloring is that it was in the bright sun, and the headstones were in the deep shade. I was shooting in the worst possible light, and was trying to keep things mostly in the shade, but it was pretty difficult. I probably could've done something in PS, I guess. I don't know how to do much more than levels & unsharp mask.

You can get Agfa Scala at B&H. If you try it, make sure to buy the mailers at the same time - not just any lab can process it. I took a Scala class, and I've really enjoyed using it. It took me a few rolls to learn to visualize in B&W - using a red filter helps with that.

I like this technique. Also try one like this, but move the camera during only part of the exposure. Or do a double exposure, one still and one moving.

I really like it - I'd like to see the original slide, though. There's nothing like a projected slide. This looks like a painting on black velvet. I don't understand, though, is this a scan of the slide or a photo of the projected slide?

I'm so jealous you got so close - we have some great blue herons that roost close by, but you can't get anywhere near them. Little black specks with my 200mm. I love the bright blue water and the lily pads. I think you did a good job with this tough lighting situation. Isn't Provia 400 great?

This is great love the tones - I'm anxious to get back there and do some B&W of the EMP. Have you ever tried Agfa Scala - B&W slide film? It's real nice, but a pain to get processed and printed. I've haven't used B&W print film much - I think I'll give it a try.

This is great! Did you use a filter for the star effect - or did min aperture do that?

Simple and lovely. The DOF works for me, as well as the limited palette. Evokes the feeling of a lazy, warm spring day.

I really enjoyed your portfolio - this one is particularly inspiring since I'm about to start a B&W Scala class. Ditto the comment about the snake's belly - and I love all the textures. I saw your post on "day job", I also work for AB (in Seattle) so I had to check you out and say hi!

Oh, this one's really lovely. I like the monochromatic tones and it feels like a painting. I see scenes like this all the time driving to work when I can't stop - you're inspriring me to get out shooting! Thanks for checking out my portfolio. P.S., tell your buddy John that I'm a GIRL! :-)

This is really nice, it caught my eye immediately. I think I like the original sandwich even better. Nice to meet another Freeman/Andre fan - I'd love to take one of their workshops - if they still do them. Thank you for the kind comments on my images!

Good one Charlie. Given your light situation, you really did need to use the flash - I think the fill flash would have given you a better result. I don't know your camera - can you bounce the flash? If you don't have a low white ceiling or white wall (alot of barns don't!) you can maybe bounce the flash off a piece of white foamcore or somthing. Or try using a diffusor on your flash, in combination with the fill flash. I've heard of just putting tissue over the flash. I hope you get a chance at this one again. Take care!

The flash was fooled by the people in the foreground, and the haziness on the subject was probably from the lab trying to bring out detail in the subject. I think it would probably have been fine if the other people weren't in the way of the flash, just be aware of obstacles next time. Try to fill the frame with your subject.

I KNEW I saw this before. So I checked your website - I saw it displayed in the visitor's center at the Bellevue Botanical Garden a couple of weeks ago. It was one of my favorites, good job!
