Yamil, The very red area in front of the eye is not that common and only happens for a week or two each season. Nice Shot! Love the pose. Snow Egrets are very entertaining birds. Thank you for your comment on my Great Egret photoart. We are looking forward to seeing your beautiful native country.

Terry: Thank you for the kind comments. It is fanciful and it is, most decidedly, unreal. That was intentional on my part.

Yamil: Thank you for the kind offer. We would love to see these birds. We took our son to Galapagos but he is much too busy now with a new job. He is working on the water purification procedures that all the coastal California communities and institutions are having to deal with over the next few decades.

Yamil: Such an unusual looking bird. My wife and I would love to see these. We have often traveled to wine country in the past few years. Next time, perhaps we can find some of these and the other Northern California birds. We passed through in September but we were on a mission to move our son from Alaska to San Diego. He is a biologist now working at the Birch Aquarium of Scripps Institute.

Yamil: Oh my sacred bovine, you have given me a lot of new information. The trip we are taking is with ElderHostel. The description is here: http://www.elderhostel.org/programs/programdetail.asp?DId=1 %2D32MDA1#accomm

I do appreciate every word of your advice and I did want to go in spring but we couldn't manage it this year and each year can be so different. We are going, instead, to the southeastern corner of Arizona in three weeks for the start of migration through that area. I can take all my gear to AZ but I don't think I will take the 500mm lens to Costa Rica as it is not a photo expedition as such and time is limited. This is truly an exploratory trip because we hope to return to Costa Rica for some more photo directed travel on our own or with a dedicated photo guide.

Thank you again for all the wonderful information. I will be going over it closely and marking the more important parts for use in our trip.

Yamil: Thank you for your gracious remarks. I note that you are holding an M16 rather than a camera in your portfolio portrait. I have found that good photographers tend to be good riflemen and vice versa. Something of the same skills are used. We are observing four migrations in Costa Rica this fall. We look forward to seeing the Quetzals, whales, turtles, and raptors on our trip.
