Critiques From Jared Kellar

Great shot, James, I've always been a fan of long-shutter creek/falls shots, and this one is no exception. I would have been tempted to keep the shutter open for longer, but I think I would have eliminated the detail in the water that really makes your shot work (overly softened water would have caused conflict in subjects (the detail-less bright water and the finely detailed, darker moss and rocks). The detail left in the water creates a definite subject, and allows the eye to wander when it is ready, and not because it is searching for subject. Again, excellent decision on exposure.

I just keep thinking how this shot would make an excellent desktop image or poster that could be looked at when one needs an escape (ie from the long Chicago winters that I've been stuck in). A shot like this would definitely keep me going.

The simple background makes no question of the subject, as does the pop of the yellow roof. This is a great example of excellence in simplicity.

firstly, i'd crop a bit off the left and top to clean-up the lines, and it's too bad you couldn't have centered yourself between the two center arches, and the lghtposts definitely don't add to the shot. All that having been said (yes i'm a bit picky- but you'd never guess it from my half-assed photos), this photo is a definite attention-grabber. The multitude of color and detail along with the unusual perspective and geometrical repetition make this photo interesting and a fun one to view.

I've always been a fan of advanced geometry in photos, and the symmetry and echoing lines in this one are fantastic. The sunburst and lensflare make this pop.

I think you are seeing the spherical and/or chromatic abberrations associated with the 0.25x attatchment

Carmem,
I noticed while browsing your portfolio that you have a very good eye for color (something I hope to learn), and this picture is so attention grabbing- it's great.

Keep the good things coming!

I can see this photo hanging above the fireplace in a kind of contemporary-meets-nature designed room. Excellent abstract.

Love the framing within the frame, and the colors and lighting were just right. Too bad the car morror wouldn't allow the same composition, but with a level horizon in the reflection. This is such a fun, simple type of shot, but I haven't seen it done so well.

I calibrated my scanner a couple of days ago and here's a picture of the same thing, just a little better

The blue light was shining on the building from below- a construction lamp, I think- it's actually what drew my attention to this building in particular.

Yes, take out the upper left corner in photoshop by coying the next nearest dark and light stripe and pasting it over the bright spot that is there and this picture (which I already like) could be improved. Perhaps something like below.

Thanks everyone for the comments, I definitely agree that the sky is washed. I can't remember if I shot this with a polarizer or before I bought one, plus the f-stop should have been around an 11, possibly. I'l try and shoot it again this summer.

I was originally going to critique the photo by saying that the vanishing point is pushed a little to the edge, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it just where it is. I wonder how it might look with a wider angle lens and a panoramic aspedct ratio. If you have the opportunity to retake this shot with the train on the tracks I would be very interested in seeing it.
