Congrats James, I learn you know all about deserts. My advice was not necessary ;-) Great view on the dunes.

Hi, thanks for the comment first of all.

Second, not sure if you've ever been to China, but the conditions you describe in your comment really don't exist here. I don't think I've seen a purple sky in more than four year in China... I've seen grey, brown, hazy, smoky, black, and on some occasions even a blue one. But no purple ones. I think the reasons for that are fairly obvious.

Further, the bridge only reopened early this year, so any photos taken before that time wouldn't have been much good as it was under scaffolding and other assorted construction materials.

The bridge is actually only about two hundred metres from my doorstep, so getting out there to take photos is no problem. But the conditions are usually the same from day to day.

I can only imagine an early evening with purple sky and when those lanterns light up. Your image looks a bit flat. It is a bridge after all and it is not going anywhere. You could make an effort at shooting it a bit latter. Trust me, in photography the harder You try the better it looks.

I prefer the black and white version too. Cropping out the left third makes a strong image also, I think.

Hi Andy. This was in July of this year. I spent three days in Da Zhai back then. In fact, i just got back from Longsheng and Xingping two days ago. Working on some of the images from those two places right now.

I think I should have some nice results to post soon, although a lot of shots didnt turn out as hoped. I'm trying to master the shadow/highlight tool on CS2 now (the karst hills around Xingping have a lot of shadows and I need to try lighten them somewhat).

The fall colours did/do look nice in the rice terraces.

You have a lot of great shots here. How much time did you have to shoot? These are excellent.

Yes, I saw a documentary on Shanghai with that new high tower,
lots has changed in the cities indeed ! Also the youth I assume with blonde hair, ipod gsm and dating at Mc Donalds and clones.

Very interesting place, I like those chinees fonts, they are clear, very impressive DOF here and perspective, driving the viewe so deep into the whole image.

Wishing you all of the best my friend

Wolf, it seems to have been some time since you've been in China. The good news is that many of the rural areas won't have changed too much in the past 20 years, so it's not too late (yet). The cities are a different story though.

Lovely, I always wanted to see chinas rural area. Only made it to Beying, Forbidden palace and Tienamin square ( just a year before the students revolt )

Very good shot James !

Alison, The buildings do look nice in the evening when they light them up, but I havent tried to photograph that yet.

As for the meaning of the architecture/design, I don't know. Hard to say and I don't think most of the people I know would have an answer either.

Alison, you really have to look hard these days for this type of architecture. It's disappearing faster than you can imagine. Many cities in China don't have any of it any longer.

Hi .B. This image was one of my first digital images, and at the time I really liked it (still do). But now I see how little I knew and how much I had to learn back then.

Thanks for the inspiring comment here.

Take care ~ James

You're right Alison. While I was on this old street taking photos, this girl was not pleased I was taking her photo. After this one I just left her alone. Usually the kids in China will jump in front of the camera, but sometimes not.

The B/W here is very beautiful. This portrait is wonderful, I like her direct look which seems to be challenging you a bit. Alison
