Antonio... there is no desaturation work, actually. That farm grew white and orange pumpkins

Thanks for the comments! I only just realized this image shouldn't be in the "below your feet" project because the camera wasn't paralell to the ground... so I'll need to edit that. Once I got down to ground level I was amazed at how many photo opportunities jumped out at me - this one turned out much better than I'd originally thought!

I love the color in this image! The stark white background makes it look like a tinted B&W - excellent composition!

I finally figured out this was a columbine bloom (it helps to have a mother in law who gardens!)

Ahh, the elusive Haystack Rock... if you live there, or have the chance to be there in the AM try getting down as the sun rises... Haystack is front lit at sunrise and it makes for a completely different look. Nice haze, but I have to agree that it's a bit too centered.

I don't think the snow really has to be white anyway, it's reflecting the sky above just a bit which is a brilliant blue. I love how the lines in the snow lead off into the distance, great composition!

Wow, this is a neat perspective... makes me feel like I'm a mouse peeking out from a hole in the ground.

I like the position of the duck, it looks like he's trying to blend in with his surroundings. I think the shot looks a little flat, it could be the scan or perhaps it needs a little more contrast?

This is great! I love the glowing effect, it makes the whole shot feel very dreamy, like a child's imagination.

Hi Raymund - thanks for the comment. The lines are from my scanner, aka my nemesis.

John, thanks for the advice... yow, I hadn't noticed how blue it was! I think my images turn a bit blue when they go from scanner to PS, I color corrected it a bit and I think it looks more natural (although the scanner lines are even worse now...)

Eeana - I took the original color shot, copied the entire image and pasted it onto a new document in Photoshop. Then I converted that image to black and white, then back to RGB, copy it and paste it over the original in a new layer (you have to convert the B&W back to RGB in order to put it back in the original document) Next I erased the car portions of the B&W image so the color came through from below. When I was all done I flattened the image.

The best lighting I've found is an overcast day, the light is bright enough without being harsh and contrasty. Is she about three or four months old? I wonder if she'd like to do a tummy shot on a blanket outside maybe (prop a small pillow under the blanket under her arms to bring her head up higher and keep the camera down at her eye level). In any case, if you're doing it alone I'd set up a tripod with a shutter release, that way you can frame her, get her to look towards the camera and smile and all you have to do is squeeze the bulb.
I like the way this black velvet background came out.

This shot was taken at 11:00 at night, shortly after I backed into a portion of the monster spider's web (this is just a tad larger than actual size!) It's backlit by my porch light and there was a slight breeze, so there is some motion blur in the shot itself... however when I compare the contact sheet to the scan it is far more blurry on the scan. The scanner didn't move, I think I just need a larger print to get the finer details of this shot. Unfortunately it'll be a good couple months before my darkroom equipment can be set up, but this is the first print on my list of "to do's" when that happens.
Thanks everyone for your comments!

It's funny you just commented on one of my shots as I was looking at this one
I love the action in this shot, it reminds me of the view I have when I go to concerts, and the line of the ride cymbal brings you all the way around the details of the shot (drummer, tom, stick action, high-hat) If you had the whole Zildjian label showing it would be a cool marketing shot for them!

The first thing I thought was that the lighting is very harsh - I totally agree with Steve. Perhaps even an overcast day would help get rid of the extreme contrast and allow you to get more middle tone detail in the wood of the structure. I like the idea of getting in closer to shoot more details of the barn, I see some really good potential for abstracts with all those crazy lines. What bugs me in the composition is that the barn is dead center horizon, I'd come in closer and put the barn in the bottom or top 1/3 of the frame. I think maybe some slide film with good saturation (velvia 50) would help make the colors pop a bit more, especially if you get dawn or dusk lighting.

I like the textures in this shot, but the composition leaves me wondering what I should be focusing on. I wonder if it might work better from a different angle, or cropped in closer to be an abstract of just the fuzzies?

I like the grain, and I do like the way she is vignetted, but I kind of feel like it should be one effect or the other (unless, of course, the background is too busy with people or a boom box or something) If the background is just natural (beach, rock formations, ocean, etc...) I think it would look spectacular to have the entire shot showing with the grain. Or, at least show a little more background, like a traditional oval shaped vignette maybe? I guess, if there's going to be a slight outline around the subject I feel like I want to see just a touch more.
Beautiful pose, great expression and perfect composition!

This is really nice composition, but I feel like the lighting is a little flat. It might just be the scan though, but a little more contrast would make it pop, IMHO
