Hello Hugo, the title comes from the famous Rembrandt painting by the same name (heh-heh - Dutch connection!)- because there is a small patrol boat, hardly visible in there. I take many shots of this place in different light conditions. It's two of the largest steel conglomerates of Canada, Stelco and Dofasco. Best regards, Ina

Wheee! How come I've missed these (don't answer). Love the silhouet of the blast furnace, the piles of ore and coal as well as the oxy steel plant. There's definitely something beautiful in both nature as well as heavy industries.... The ruggedness of the heat, the gasses and the activty of processes that have barely changed over the last few milleniums just fascinates me...
Cheers,
Hugo.
PS: I really need to go back to your portfolio soon. I'm sure I'll find quite a few gems there.

This is again absolutely superb, Ina. Very good post-processing, absolutely no noise, very plastic smoke. A good pair to my previous favourite. Grat: Gyorgy

Thanks Jacek :) The title comes in part from the little patrol boat (hardly visible at this scale) and it is also a pun reference to Rembrandt's "Night Watch." The Rembrandt painting was very dark, and it was thought to be a night scene, but when cleaned, it become clear that it was full of color, and not a night scene - however the title remained, being already established by all museums and catalogs. Mine's not exactly a night scene, it was taken around 7 PM, with some daylight, on a misty day.

Hi Margaret, I didn't know about the gold filter, I'll have to try that! Mine is done with curves, hue & saturation. At any rate, yours has a beautiful resolution and it looks like a framed painting. I'm going to study this subject in the future, since it's very exciting for me, as well as close by. I imagine England has many a steel mills, too!

Ina thank you so much for the 'glowing' comment on my upload for Larry. I spotted this in your portfolio and thought maybe you would like to see it with the gold treatment I gave mine. A similar type scene to my upload and a very nice one too. Margaret

Ina, I had not realized that it was water in the foreground until you mention it, then I recognized it instantly, of course. The water might provide some spectacular reflects on a calm winter's night!

Fantastic job, Mark! I love the blue mood. This subject lends itself to so many interpretations! It's going to be an ongoing project for me, since it's also really close. This picture was "a shot in the dark" literally. I wanted to get a nightscape, but it started to drizzle, and the air was misty, not really good for low light pictures at max. zoom (300mm). I wanted to experiment with higher ISO, although I don't like the graininess. So once I increased the saturation and contrasts, it became spotty. I used Neat Image a number of times, and lost some sharpness. You can't have it both ways! I guess I kept the water only because of that little boat, which is hardly visible at that scale. Anyway, I like what you did! It's more of a painterly, atmospheric mood. In winter, when the air is clear I'll try something sharper. Ideally I should get closer, but I'd have to go by boat. Adding the fact that this is also a patrolled area, I might look really suspicious:)

The silhouette and smoke/steam work very well in this shot, most especially because of the crop. the letterbox form here follows the horizontal silhouette and especially the direction/contour of the smoke.
As a possible suggestion, the silhouette effect might be helped by blacking out the foreground at the bottom of the shot. And as an alternate aproach, you could tint in blue rather than orange, which would make the shot look more about nighttime, plus be colder looking. On the other hand, the orange tint communicates a bit of the heat (and perhaps foulness) we often associate with steel mills. Dunno, maybe I'm just rambling now :). But I took the liberty to experiment a little... In any event, another fantastic work, Ina!
