Angela as oposed to the kids II I whould prefer a much smoother aproach(not refering to grain).
It seems you compressed the gamut and as result few levels of gray show up.
I find the strong white in the eyes of the boy and some burn on the dogs fur (nose) realy contrasts with the mood of the picture which I find very well executed and cropped.

I think the composition is very strong and it holds a lot of interest. Love your tones and the details that show up on the dog's fur. NICE!
