About Second in a series from a local steel mill. They are pouring the molten steel (not gold) into sand molds. There are acutaly 2 molds stacked here and they fill the bottom first, then the top. You can see the flames coming out of the middle of the lower mold. They pour until it splashes on the top as you see here.

They put a material blanket over the cauldron so they aren't blasted with the radiant heat. It is like cotton, but obviously withstands the heat better. They wear these metalic aprons that will repel any splashing metal.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the comment, Steve. I spent quite a time trying to see your creature. After thorough review, I think I want to know the kind of wine you were drinking!!

Mark

(actually, I did see what you were talking about)

Another great shot from the series, Mark! Your about is really interesting, too. It's amazing the things you learn on this site!

Great photograph Mark, not sure if it is me drinking too much wine but it looks like a creature with two arms holding the sides (in orange) and even two eyes.

Yes, I must have had too much wine lol

Best wishes,
Steve

Another good candid. Reflection of light/heat on the protective coveralls shows how hot it must be.

Very well done reportage shot! I like how you can see the details without the liquid fire being overexposed. I bet that is a really hot job in the summer. :)

This picture is great too Mark. The contrast between the glowing steel and the rest of the scene really gives you a feeling of the heat. I can't wait to see the rest.

an apron to catch splashing metal !!! Amazing shot, it's weird but the "cotton" over the bowl looks like snow to me.

Thanks, Don. This mill is at 46th and Farnam St about 4 blocks from my house. When it was built nearly 100 years ago, it was 'just outside of Omaha'. Needless to say, it is somewhat 'inside Omaha' now.
