What a great essay in a stunning setting, Hugo - quite a contrast to the NY subway. So crowded, if you turn around someone's backpack will hit you in the face.
This just glows and the people are a marvelous collection. Could be a storyboard for a movie.
Cheers, Leora

Hi Hugo,
Excellent. Very interesting subject given the recent sucide bombing of London tubes.
If it was taken around the time of the awful incidence - then you should consider yourself as very lucky indeed !
Here you are showing some possitive work of the tube and yet there are people who want to ruin these innocent commuters !.
Since those bombings I am very warry to travel to UK just incase i might be mistaken and beaten up !!! Scarry thought indeed even though I am not a muslim.
All the Asians are now carrying a heavy burden - "unless proven otherwise you are a muslim and a potential sucide bomber".
regards, ken.

EXCELLENT collection Hugo!
You have all these arranged perfectly! GR8 composition.
I especially like the lower right corner. The circular lines and reflections are really nice. That one is a 'stand alone' image.
Very good job on this collection, Hugo. Lori ;)

Fantastic! I'm amazed at the quality of these images, particularly the ones where I knew you were balancing onboard while in motion. Also, it is interesting that everyone wasn't staring at you wielding that camera at them...lol. Another thing, is the light -- it's just beautiful. You are a master at composition, and it shows here. That pole going through the the man in the upper corner is just grand. Really enjoyable series of images here as well as the independent sets you've posted. Congrats on another BIP! Antonia

Hi,Hugo As I mentioned on the previous one that the coming ones , more clearing the idea behind this project, indeed ,although the elements are a bit different from the main objects but they are part of movement and transportation, capturing the action as and when it happens is a great idea, within this arrangement, knowing the work behind those shot the small weakness can be neglected, due to movement, lack of light and a crowded place, but the main weakness noticed and can not be neglected the first image of the second row(first left), badly cropped. Saying that IMO this image is more powerful than the previous one within its clear subject, dynamic, a good arrangement of the contains puzzles and most carries a message within its theme. Saeed

Hi Paul, I felt pretty ambiguous about posting this one after the recent ragedy in London. I know the City pretty well to, and have many friends there... For a full and indepth argument, see Randy's comments, and my replies to him on this photo. Feel free to mingle. Eventhough it's not my intention to make this shot a tribute to the victims, it is something a lot of people addressed, and with good cause, too.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Randy, On the contrary. Much appreciated. Knowing many shots in london, I anticipated the link with the tragedy that happened. Received many comments linking the image to those horrendous events, too. I only want to distantiate this image from those events, as I have a strong belief the Londoners will prevail, and more importantly, who am I to post a tribute... It'll be too pretentious to proclaim an image to be a tribute in a series that has no other meaning than a consecutive number of related uploads to say "bye" for a fortnight. I'm sure you'll understand what I mean.
Cheers,
hugo

I like your choice for the center image. I am wondering what it would be like to add an image of people coming towards you on the escalator as the first image and them going away as the last image to complete the story. Still I love all of the shots and put together they work well together. Nice work~

Hi Hugo, on the contrary, I should have been more clear about my remarks. I assumed these shots were made and your series planned before the sorrowful event took place, and much like images and even movies set for release before the events in U.S. on 9/11, emotional connections cannot be avoided. It would have been a mistake on your part to abandon or alter your work because of yet to unfold human events. Your work stands on it's own, yet perceptions of it after the fact are influenced by life, much as any photograph of the twin towers took on a totally different context. Now I didn't seek any deeper meaning to this piece than I believe you intended - it is rather like how I might feel if I had a friend who was assaulted and killed on a subway, I would have a strong emotional reaction, but it would be quite apart from your actual work. Sorry to go on for so long. Take care.
Randy

Hi Randy, Thank you very much for your indepth comment. I'm impressed by your accurate perseption, the ninth image a mirrored version. Very well spotted.
I was quite hesitant of uploading this one, because I didn't want to create a reference to the recent tragedy. I even slightly altered it, as in the original one, I had a shot of Kings' Cross in it.
I pertinently don't want to create the illusion the timing of this upload was influenced by those tragedies. Within the series, it fulfills a much less profound role... The first being about planes, the second about trains, and that doesn't leave much to the imagination what the third one will be about. That rather ruins the thought for anyone who had any profound, indepth feelings about this shot. In stead of replacing one, maybe I should've abandoned the whole sequence... Hope I didn't disappoint you, but I do appreciate your comment, and actually flatters me, as you sought a much deeper message in this series...
Mind you, If possible, I would post a whole triptych with the profound intention you described, If I could...
Cheers,
Hugo

I'll have to comment before glancing at any previously made, as I'm sure to be repeating some other's thoughts.
This is a chilling 9set as it vividly slaps one in the face seeing it now after the barbarism that recenty took place. It is sad that innocuous photos bring thoughts of pain and death and ageless wanton savagery. That you took these pictures in this place brings it closer to home, and the phrase 'but for the grace of God' plays heavily, for we could be reading "Hugo is no longer with us". Are we all now photographers in a war zone?
I'm now eagerly awaiting the 3rd installment before even completing thoughts on this one. It's much easier to understand your placements in this set than the previous one, and it doesn't cause my mind to work at rearranging them to my own sensibilities. You have very much captured the quick eye movements one has while being in a public place with many people. I like the pole placement in the first image, but it seems bothersome repeated in the third. The fifth is a perfect choice to anchor the others. Did you mirrow the last image? It ends the set well, with a backpact leaving the station intact.

Hi Angelo, I agree, the middle shot was entirely inspired by your image. Couldn't resist taking it....:)
I consider it to be a huge compliment as well; and I do value your comments highly, as they put the finger right on the sore spot in most photos. No niceties here either, btw.
I bought an Olympus, as it was cheaper, but I only use it rarely; I've been shooting F100, D100 and Yashica Mat most of the time, and recently I've bought a D2x, which is absolutely a fantastic camera. I think the appoach is similar to the ixus shots; all shot from the hip, not looking through the viewfinder.
Thanks again,
Cheers,
Hugo

Hugo,
This is almost overwhelmingly flattering. Better than any UF award, to be perfectly honest.
I am being perfectly sincere when I say you are the one who inspired me in the first place. E.g. posting things in a set of three. I still try to do that these days (e.g. 3 colour landscapes, followed by 3 b&w ones) and that is an idea I copied from you. Also the considered and dissecting style of commenting: I learned that from reading your comments to others.
I can definitely see the influence of some of my old photos here (the center shot in particular is a dead giveaway! :), and this time I like the arrangement much better than the previous.
I think this is a great tribute to Londoners and the underground.
But... I thought you had bought an Ixus. What happened to it?

Hi Roger, one more thing: Angelo gave me the idea to taking these candid shots in the London Tube, arranging them in a 3x3 matrix is my idea, as I've collected quite a few shots on different themes. Hi Roger, very interesting idea. Looking forward to it! Discussed it with Michael Kanemoto yesterday: there are many photographers on usefilm who have such consisten portfolio's that such a collage of individual shots could work very well for them. For example:
The urban abstracts of Jeanette Hagglund The B&W compositions of Verena Rentrop the dynamic carshots by Kostas (he's already done that, though) Teunis Havemans' typical Dutch landscapes, you name them. I can think of several people who would do great composing such a thing with their florals.
Making one with your cellphonephotos would also be awesome!
Cheers and thanks for your comment,
Hugo
