Standing in front of such a majestic mosque must have been an unforgettable experience, Hugo! This is good enough to make us guess the size even if it shows only a small part of it. Above all, it gives a better idea than your previous post about its fascinating architecture. I like this photo cause it contains a stunning amount of details that make it interesting and entertaining. Excellent composition, beautiful warm colours and the light is superb. Great capture! Emgy

I like seeing views thru arches, here you have also created the same affect with the pillars in the foreground, and arches in the back. This image is so full of lines, everywhere I look lines with views beside them and above and all around them. Very Nice ! For me the person is not that important in this picture but does not take away at all. My apologies for not being good at putting my feelings to words. Fantastic picture. My compliments Lee

Beautiful photo. The monochrome colours of the building form a nice contrast with the sitting person. The dof & framing makes the whole scene look like a stage, with the architecture as decor-pieces.

Hallo Hugo, deze had ik zowat gemist. Ik vind de natte voorgrond en de reflectie er in juist de extra diepte geven , je kijkt anders naar deze foto , waar al heel veel diepte in zit en scherp tot in de details Groet Teunis

Hi Telmo, You got me there. I actually don't think of this one as a "regular" shot, but it is digital. The S602z gave the impression of a true SLR, but believe me, this series is the odd one out, though. I think unless you use a true Digital SLR, most of my images are the "point and shoot" type... And unfortunately the S602z is no longer, it got destroyed during a sandstorm in the desert. It was a slow and painful death, and the camera is humbly missed.... Now I have to get myself a new one...;o)
Cheers,
hugo

I read somewhere, in one of your coments, that you use(d) digital cameras for regular photos... So, you call this, one of your "regular"... I'm so happy we have different opinions! ;-)) The eventual "regularity" of you digital camera vanishes when you turn it on and use it... I'm not being nice - I'm being honest. Tom says Escher... I agree. A "regular" Escher!... ;-))) Congrats my friend!

Tom, Correction / Refining the diopter answer:
The diopter only applies, to Close-up lenses (which screw into the front of an existing lens and act like a reading glass) are often marked in "diopters" (2.5 diopter close-up lens) The diopter value of a lens is calculated by taking the reciprocal of the focal length expressed in meters. Each diopter is the number of times the focal length of the lens will divide into one meter. Not my own definition, but one found on

Hi Tom, Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it....;o)
The mosque was not quite finished when we were there, and I guess the plain concrete with the holes in it still needs to be decorated.
I tend to take most shots by hand (even up to 1/8', although that doesn't always give me the desired result...) After setting the camera to the lighting situation, I compose the shot. Just before exposing, I try to find a vertical and a parallel line in the composition, and I align those with the edges of the viewfinder. (that only works with focal lenses bigger than 50mm true)
If I'm correct (not sure here) the diopter has nothing to do with it with film, and I don't see why it would make a difference with digital either, as it only is a magnifying factor. With wide angle, there is a difference, as most lenses do distort the image a bit... (diopter factor smaller than one @ 50 mm focal lenth true)
Cheers,
Hugo

The lighting is great;the directional sunlight highlighting some portions of the building while the rest is evenly exposed.I also like your arch within arch framing that draws the eyes into the depths of the mosque. The inclusion of the human figure adds to the interest.

hey hugo, very cool! reminiscent of arches. very escher-ish in a 2D kind of way. in other words, it's like what an escher would look like if he didn't have the ability to move up and down. i like it as-is but at the same time i don't think it would hurt to crop a bit off the top. not much, just down to the foremost "dish". it'll probably move the primary cluster of columns just a bit off-center. ;^)
a couple of questions: the main arch, just behind the person, appears to be just plain concrete. it has symmetric holes in it which leads me to believe that the facade was once bolted on and has now fallen? or been removed?
also, is this handhled? if so, what is your secret for lining up your viewfinder so perfectly? i have a grid focusing screen on my viewfinder but it seems to be a bit tilted when i look through the eyepiece. is this an effect of the diopter setting? should i have the focusing screen replaced?
take care, tom

Hi Hugo, Excellent shot. The pillars are beautifully straight and perpendicular and the composition just right. The solitary figure gives a sense of scale and the shot contains an interesting mix of shapes and contours. Nice work! Kind regards, Chris P.S. The person sitting there get a little lost in all the details from the mosque. Of course that's not bad. After all churches and mosques are supposed to encourage a feeling of smallness towards the god in question. Nice shot but a bit busy..
