I think it's fine. You're not so much showing the layout, as the geometry of the thing, and the scale as it fades from focus. And as long as a few are in focus, at least in my opinion it's fine. If you wanted more depth of field, of course, you could use smaller aperture, f8 say, and a tripod. In fact, one could set up some small mid and highlights, some white umbrellas, etc. It's an interesting pattern.
