Yes, phil, thats correct. The noise was terrible, ive learned the hard way about digital cameras, long exposure and noise... nothing beats film for these sort of shots. I tried to reduce the noise as much as possible but there was still a lot there. I added the lens flare, to liven up the shot a bit and cause its a bit different to have a lens flare on a night time shot.

im thinking the blur and other filters might be to cover up the digital noise that must have come from such a long exposure.... thats just my guess??? otherwise i love long exposures with star trails

Steve,
I seem to prefer star trails to be in focus, but there are some who deliberately defocus their star trails photos to emphasize the colors of the stars trailing on the film. If your camera has autofocus, it may be best to override it and just focus on infinity. I would love to be able to shoot the southern skies...

Photoshop flare tool eh? Nice shot Steve, esp. for the patience. I'm guessing half an hour exposure.
