You can see from this detail that the original is crisp, but not as clean as you would think from the final posting...

No problem, there are a couple of factors at work here:
Hyperfocal distance: If you have a sunny day, like here, you can use a high F-Stop and focus on a midrange or close object and still retain focus through the whole shot. My Nikon has an algorithm for the landscape setting that does this calculation as best as possible, but you can work out the mechanics by hand, or with a SLR view with the iris yourself to see what will be in focus. I'm sure you can read up on hyperfocal distance as well using google.
High megapixel: My camera shoots with 6 megapixels, and the reduction to 800 pixels wide will bring a lot of stuff into crisp focus through the reduction.
Sharpen filter: I use a sharpen filter in photoshop after resizing to make the final posting crisp. Some feel that this creates funny edges where the sky meets the ground, but overall the effect makes for a nice clean image.
Hope that helps. I would not use sharpening on my prints, but it helps make the smaller images on the website look nice.
I also recently started converting my images from the Adobe color space to SRGB before posting, because the Adobe color space images will loook a bit dull in SRGB (the web) unless I convert and then recorrect. Looks like I overdid the sky a bit on this one based on feedback.

Ok, how do you get the cactus in such amazing focus, and close to you and the background so I can see what feels like individual boulders?

May do that - this one was pretty much unaltered - I think the polarizer does kick out some bright colors in sunlight though. I should go back and darken the blue up a bit.

Strong composition Michael. My taste would be to tone down the digital blue sky a tad. Hope you had a good Xmas and a Happy New Year. Regards John

Beautiful Michael. Sharp and crisp. The cactus in the foreground help to improve the sense of deep here. Great photo my friend, congratulations.

Hi again, Michael, awesome clear sight; the cacti in the composition make this one tick. Love the colourdepth. Good shot!
Cheers,
Hugo
