About This is the new "ambassador" of the De Wildt Cheetah Park in South Africa. He is a rare King Cheetah and was bred in captivity. For a (hefty) fee, visitors are given the opportunity to pose with him and of course we just had to! How many people can say that they actually stood next to, and touched!, such a predator!

Shooting was troublesome as :
1. It was indoors with no lighting
2. The dried grass background was not high enough, thus a lot of white wall, harsh sunlight, etc. in the background
3. The photographer is not allowed to bend down or be in any position lower than the Cheetah who was lying/sitting on a table (reason being one does not want to be perceived as easy prey!)
4. For obvious reasons, the animal is wearing a body harnass and collar
5. The handler's hand/body is difficult to avoid as she needs to placate the animal and assure him that all is fine

I have taken some shots of Robert posing with Shaka and will post later.

It was a WONDERFUL experience. The park is well-run and the animals seem healthy and happy - considering everything. We were taken on a tour through the cheetah, wild dog, hyena and antelope camps and it was an experience of a life-time to sit in an open truck, just metres away from these wild animals! If ever there was a good reason to visit South Africa, this would be it! :-)

Wow....
This is a close up !
What a thrill to be so close and then to have a personal shoot ! wow!
The eyes and clarity of the entire picture is awesome. I would say you took good advantage of your time with this Cheetah.
I'm also glad to hear that they are in good health, I visited Bead Country SD once and was very disappointed to see the health the bears were in as they were all over weight and under exercised.
Some of them actually had a hard time walking.
I'm surprised that you have to be so careful when taking pictures since he was raised in captivity. But it's a good thing as I would not want to be attacked by him.
Fantastic moment and capture.
Love the eyes.....
Lee

Great details look at the eyes, as of say you can not humble when you are as good as I am :)
Must be great experience to be so close to those lovely animals, knowing the story condition behind the shot, its absolutely marvelous. Saeed

He has that 'deer in the headlights' look about him. Beautiful animal and fun to see so 'up close and personal'!!!

Beautiful coloring, I can tell you really enjoyed the opportunity to photograph these gorgeous animals.

Lori :)

Hi Linn,
Great animal portrait, very well done, I would not have noted most of the adversities if you had not mentioned them. Very clear picture, great shot. Best regards Jorg

The "about" is much appreciated as it helps put the image in perspective. Otherwise my comment might indicate a preference for a different coloured background, losing the evidence of the harness etc. As it is, I can just state what a wonderful image it is taken under very restrictive conditions!

Wow Linn what an experience and what a wonderful shot, especially given the circumstance, - I can understand you not wanting to be perceived as 'easy prey'
