Hi Alastair, thanks for the comment and the photograph.
The creators of the memorial were pretty accurate however, as your photograph shows, there is nothing like being there. I can only quess what it was like in my great grandparents day and I am sure that it was much tougher than I could guess.

I have put the Connemara coast on my list of places to visit.

Excellent shot and very sympathetic framing. To see the old farms in Ireland (especially around the Connemara coast) makes you appreciate how hard life was there in those times (I've attached an image from the the coast for you). If you haven't been the trip is well worth while. Lovely image and well coloured.
