About Hongcun, an old village in southern Anhui province, is an example of the type of settlement that developed in feudal China, and to a very large extent, has disappeared over the past century. This village, containing many examples of Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture, is exceptionally well-preserved. Deservedly so, Hongcun (and a few other villages in this region) were designated as UNESCO heritage sites in 2000.

Alison, I left a note for you regarding your question on this photo of Hongcun. Unfortunately, I neglected to use the "reply to" button and I don't think you'll see it. As a result, I'm sending you another message now.

Your portfolio is looking quite impressive, by the way.

Alison, in the "About" for this photo, I could have said that Hongcun is laid out in the shape of an ox. A hill represents the head, beside this hill are two large trees representing the horns, the pond you see here (surrounded by buildings) represents the stomach. The winding narrow streets represent the intestines, all the houses make up the body, and finally, four bridges represent the legs. There's an explanation for everything in China.

Great reflection, What an interesting looking old city. Is this on a lake? China would be such an interesting place to live and to be able to photograph, thank you for the great explanations. Alison
