The pixelated halo in the high contrast areas is a tell-tell sign of over sharpening. Less this I think your image would be a lot cleaner and show less signs of digital noise or pixelation.

Hi Neil,
Yes, I used Neat Image, it seemed to work pretty well. I downloaded it yesterday to try. Unfortunately, I had forgotton my camera was set to 400, I think that is why the quality is so bad on some of my shots, guess there is only so much one can do with a bad quality photo...I was working on one last night that has a LOT of noise, finally gave up on it and deleted it! :(
Oh well, next time you can be sure that I will remember what the ISO is set to!!

You are so right!!! Later that evening at home I realized the camera was set to 400! I was NOT happy, I usually have it at 50 or 100. I forgot that I had changed it, now I don't even remember why it was at 400! I don't even like to shoot at 200 if I can help it! OH WELL.........next time I'll check!

A GREAT image wonderfully presented.
I think the lighter outlines around some of the objects is due to oversharpening the image. It is better not to sharpen too much....Why use ISO 400???

Hi Lori, just a quick note about "Neat Image"! You can download the demo version to try it out. It seems very good and you can include it in your normal work flow ie in PS, enabling you to work on separate layers. I will probably buy it.

Great trio of photos Lori. I too prefer this one. For me it's someting about the darker blue in the sky and the feeling the subdued light from the lantern gives. It's difficult to explain as it's just a feeling, an emotion.
I'm not too good at the software side of photography, sorry - so can't help much with your question. I will however try out Chris' suggestion (Thx Chris).

It looks like it could be from saving it as a jpeg at a low factor ie 5 out of 1-10, if Neat has that option, or trying to save it at a small target size. JPEG tends to "artifact" lines like that at higher compression ratios, you can see it in images that have text in them. Unless of course the picture had that to begin with, then I dont know.
I like the composition.

Hi Lori, the composition is also different, and I'm not sure if it's an improvement. The poroximity of the objects is too close (as they are larger than in the previous one) which fills the photo a bit too much. The increased intensity of the blue does add something, though. The lighting is more subtle...
Can't help you with Neat Image. I'm only trying it out myself now.

Yes, it was shot in raw format, now that I think about it, maybe I sharpened it twice by accident. Also, it was saved as a tiff, has not been opened in jpeg at all, just went to jpeg to upload here.
I've just never had that line before, and since this was the first time I used Neat Image, I assumed that's what did it! I'll try another one that I haven't even opened yet!!

Hi Lori, I like your composition and the mood of this image. The light halo around the rigging looks like too much unsharp mask.
Neatimage does not do this unless you have sharpening turned on.
Did you take the original as a jpeg or RAW. If you use jpeg turn the in-camera sharpening off or to the lowest setting. Do any sharpening on a seperate layer in Photoshop.

Glad to help Lori :) This might not work wonders on the sky where there are larger areas of noise, but like I said, it works almost perfectly on shots of older stone buildings, roadways, and areas that should be neutral gray.

Hi Lori, this was a great location and I really like the results.
Lori, here's a very little know technique for almsot perfectly removing minor to moderate noise from digital pics, right in any version of PS:
1. Duplicate background layer.
2. Apply a guassian blur of 1.5-3pixels for 4-7MP size files.
3. Set the blend mode of the dupe layer to 'color'
4. Say good bye to excessive noise and artifacts!
It's easy and it works!! The blur is enough to remove any odd color spots less than 1-3 pixels wide/tall, the blend mode lets the detail and sharpness of the original show through 100%
Works awesome on gray areas in color photos such as stone walls, buildings, etc.
