About This was an experiment, trying to shoot a shiny black pottery piece against a black background. I found it VERY difficult to do. I may try again on a white or other colored background. Not really sure I succeeded, and don't recommend it for people who wish to retain what little sanity they have left! :O) All comments and suggestions welcome. Thanks for taking a peek. Lou

Very interesting experiment. Try to do small light ray on a black background...
I like orange background too.

Lena

Black on black is never easy. But I can see shiny black color and orange accents, round shape, the position of the lights and the light that goes around the subject, it gives depth, some space between the vase and the backgroung. I say you did very good, Excelent.!!!

Black on black, this is really interesting and difficult... Your result is quite good. If it was possible to put any small, soft light source behind the pot to get moore of the silhouette... Just have no idea how to do that. I looked at your other versions; they are very nice, especially the blue one. But still the black remains an interesting challenge. If you find a solution, please tell me. Thanks for your kind comments. Best regards :)

Altogether a very nice attempt. I wouldn't stop here if I were you. Since you're shooting digitally you must try it every possible way. Don't stop. Keep shooting on black and show us more. Subtlety takes a lot of work.

Same basic study, but using seamless blue paper in the background. Better....

Continuing my experiment on lighting and shooting shiny black objects. Quite a challenge, since it relies on the use of specular highlights. This one shot with a gold reflector in the background, sidelight with diffuser, and a bare flash set behind the vase for a little rim light. Better, but still not what I want.

Hi Lou
Of cause it is very hard to make black on black well visible. But experiments makes taking pictures so interesting, doesn't it? Nice solution. I am anxious to your next test.
Thanks for your very kind comment on my picture. Greetings, Brigitte

You did a good job with black on black! At first glance I thought it was a bowling ball, then I couldn't imagine why someone would have that design on a bowling ball! LOL
I like the one little highlight on the top which serves to give it shape!
Lori :)
