Icredible timing! So very beautiful! And the lake is not distracting at all... Personally I think it looks more interesting with it than without, because it gives more closeness than if the seagull would fly faaaaaaaaaaaar up in the sky!

The light passing through the wings and tail gave an excellent effect! Wonderful photo, despite the unfavorable composition. Congrats.

Certainly quite a difference between the Minolta and the Canon on these types of shots... Quick clear focus..good stop action..missing from the Minolta

HI bill, I don't find the white distracting except for one thing...if it is the lake, then you need to level the horizon...this is an excellent shot...good exposure and detail and a perfect dof...and I would leave it natural...I don't thinbk I would change the lake, except to straighten...

Awesome shot! I agree with the bottom edge, it leads the eyes a little away from the bird. The blur of the wings add motion, while you can see the detail in the rear feathers. I find it tough to take great pictures of birds without a huge telephoto or patience to get close enough, a 200mm just isnt big enough in most cases. Im curious on the equipment you used, 300-400mm?

Bill, absolutely excellent capture, great detail and color, excellent composition. I agree with tim though, the white area in the lower right could be cloned out or perhaps just toned down a bit. Reguards, ray w.

Seagulls always gives me that feeling of freedom, especially when they are flying high above my head. This really is a beautiful capture Bill and most of all I like the beautiful lightning! Great job, added to my favorites! Regards, Diana.

A beautiful capture Bill. The lower edge is problematic of course. Maybe cloning in photoshop is the solution. Tighter cropping runs into the wingtip but then it sometimes works to have the subject moving off-frame. I think it would be effective here. The light through the tail-feathers is beautiful. Regards.

Beautiful shot Bill. Good composition and nice crop/border. (if you did so...) :) Backlit wings are gorgeous as well!
