Very difficult and beautiful shot. The cloudy ambience has robbed off contrast. "I'm the hawk and there's blood in my Talons..." tell me who sang this? Sorry no points.

Excellent picture, almost a portrait,in dificult conditions you did sort out very well.I think the hawk is the main subject, but the tree is quite important. To pick out the hawk and get the tree as a blur could be done , but it would be a fake in the true conditions. So I think you did the best choice. My picture of the street is a similar situation.I saw the lady, but had no time to ask her permission for a close up, the only thing she deserved , but if she said yes, for certain she would pose in her best picture smile and spoil the portrait. I set the camera in average mettering and let it do its job,the best it was possible, just average. I know I could treat one by one and set the right light , but the subject did not deserve such treatment.I decide to go with "average", keep things as they are, not an art photo, but a shoping street picture. Thanks for your, always, very wise critics, You are very welcome, you critic because you know how to do...very well. Regards jorge
Beautiful capture John! But did you get a picture of Hopper's house? :) The branches really make a nice background and natural frame for the bird! Happy New Year!
...or a Red-tailed Hawk possibly? See my photo: http://www.usefilm.com/image/264833.html Sharp-shinned hawk is quite different and more elusive: http://www.enature.com/fieldguide/showSpecies_LI.asp?imageID=17637. Buteos are a little bulkier than the slender Accipiters. At any rate, great shot for hawk-watchers, John! Ah, the joys of digital photography and "megapixels make all the difference"!! Good to bump into another hawk-watcher! Eh Teunis!?
