she is sooo sweet! why not more pics? i agree with Alan, if we don't like things like this cute and smiling and joyful face we're not even human! Asha gave you good advices about lighting, you should try again with the same model ;)

What a face ! If I were you I would print this large. Its making me feel better just looking at it. You did what a photographer should here, you caught that great expression. Congratulations on Cassie by the way. Dont hesitate to use this "model" again. If we dont appreciate things like this in life, we have no business being photographers. Its true any "kid" shots dont do as well here at usefilm, so just add some mist, and do it in black and white as photoart.(joke)

Hi Charlie! Actually Rawabi has hit the nail on the head with the suggestion of diffused sunlight. If there's a large window or glass door around your place (or Cassie's parents' place) try setting the shot up again with her on her floor mat near the window/door. A reflector tilted slightly off the floor can help to get rid of any shadows (I use a home-made one -- any kind of reasonably pliable, but strong base covered in tin/aluminium foil works well). I've got a shot of my older son taken with only diffused sunlight that illustrates the point, but the shutter speed was pretty slow. Given Cassie's age, you might be better setting the shot up outside either under a covered area (patio/verandah) or under a tree that doesn't have too much dense foliage. Alternatively, try doing the same shot in exactly the same way but using a tungsten globe (your usual light bulb) instead of the flourescent lighting... it'll give it a warmer tone and if you flash fill, you'll get rid of shadows and extraneous background at the same time (as well as cutting down on the yellow-ness of the photo). If you do try these out, please post them. I'd love to see how they turn out. A :-)

soo cute :) i love the expression.. there's a trick i've read to create the best portrait which is indirect sunlight.. place the subject near a closed window then take a pic depending on that light.. i tried it with one of my cats and it looked great "mistery man.. i mean cat!"

Okay, Asha, I think you're right, better lighting would make this shot much better. I know nothing about natural lighting or indoor shots in general. What can you suggest? This was taken under overhead flourescent lights and with camera flash, which shows as the harshness you describe. Do I need to buy some special studio lights? Or maybe a different kind of flash setting? My camera has a bunch of settings which I've ignored because I tend not to do this kind of shooting. I appreciate your suggestions, Asha, thanks so much for commenting!

What a cutie!! Nice catch lights in the eyes and a good capture of a truly happy moment. This is a real departure from your usual subject matter. Nice to see you tackling a new challenge. Don't say you won't do more shots of Cassie -- she's too good a subject to pass up so quickly! My main critique is that the tones are a little cold for my taste. Have you thought about setting up the same shot with more natural light? I think natural light would soften the hard edges of the shot and give it a much more warm feel. What do you think? Asha :-)
