About I copied the layer and desaturated it and adjusted the contrast. Then I just erased it to reveal the yellow of the bottom layer.

Thanks for comments Adrew. I've only actually tried this one other time, and I liked the outcome much better. Part of the reason I decided to try this is because the light was really horrible this day. I was in North Dakota and snapped this in the Teddy Roosevelt National Park. The problem was the forest fires in Wyoming were sending a lot smoke and it really killed the light and all I had was velvia and provia, otherwise I woulda tried shooting in B+W. The sky was a muddy grey and not very good for the average landscape. This shot was hand held @ 100mm so I wasn't thinking about bracketing honestly might have been a good Idea though.

Hey Alex!

I've got to be hounest and say that I've never been a fan of selective colour use in B&W shots, but you've done a nice job with it here. Personally I only think it works when its driven by the clients corporate identity. If this was red and not yellow how many of us would instantly think 'Marlboro ad camaign circa 1995'?

As to Maja's comment, I have to say that was my first thought, but if you desat the image it seems to look ok (making allowances for compression). I think its a bit of an optical illusion because of the way that the use of colour makes the sign 'very in focus' compared to the background. That said, its a bright scene so maybe you could afford a higher stop to get a greater DOF. If a tripod was involved I'd have bracketed +- 2 stops to give some wider tones to play with in PS and possibly a K2 to increase contrast and bring out the sign even more.

Good work, up to your usual high standard!

Good idea.Little out of focus? Also,I would like you to try next time to get focus on the road and sign.Hills can be in background, but not so much space for them.
Also I like that contrast between B&W colors and yellow lines on the road.Sign in fine too.

My best regards!

Nice touch to a simple scene. These lttle color tricks can add so much to a basic image.
