About Film pushed one stop. Shot hand-held (gasp!), holding breath, no filtration. In an attempt to exercise my creativity, I decided to do a series on spiral staircases. This shot was taken in this orientation. I'd like to hear suggestions on what rotation or flip would be the best. Location: Versailles, France.

i like this spiral series you are doing...please post more:)

i must agree with what the others have said here. great lines, of course. but the hot spots on the banisters are just a tad too bright for my eye to not catch them.

i like how my eye (i might be alone on this one) follows the banister then automatically skips on over to the light fixture on the very top before it focuses on the second turn of the rail.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments.

Steve: I agree with you on having the anchor lines coming from near the bottom. In the field, this is alway my favourite orientation. But it gets boring in a series. So I thought maybe I should rotate or flip it just to see what I'd get.

Russell: Yes, I have plenty of bad pictures. With a good roll, I get 2-3 keepers out of 36. Sometimes the entire roll is wasted. I do tend to post what I think are the better ones here since I know what's wrong with the bad ones and they don't need any critiquing.

Think it'd be great in any orientation, love how it draws the eye in~

Kenneth,

I dont know very much about sprial stair cases but you seem to have done well here. The small bits of light on the balisters seem to realy work for you. I just have one question for you, Do you ever have a bad picture?

I'm telling you, this looks like a snails shell! I should say, one of the wealthier snails own customized shell. Neat shot.

Hand held is a good thing, you can create more when you are free to move around. I have hand-held as low as 1/10 of a second and still had a sharp image (not often I admit) But at 1/40 and faster there is no need for a tri-pod at all in my experience.

I think the rotation is just fine...I typically like to see my 'anchor' lines coming out from or near the bottom of the frame as you have here. Particularly on a staircase, where I feel up should in general be going towards the top of the frame.

From the left bottom (ie: CW 90) would be ok, too, though.

I'm indifferent to leftright flip here. I haven't flipped it, but don't see it being any stronger or weaker. Maybe you could wait until you had more in the series, and decide a flip based on whether you already have a few that are too similar...or too different.
