@Masha: in the first place: not all Calla's are white, Masha....this one never was. it was yellow with red stripes. second: I had no intention of imitating Mapplethorpe's Callas...I leave that to others. third: my intention was to show the beauty of a wilting flower (see f.i.also my "Growing older" Calla).

whoosh - the whole point went flying by....hit the wall - kersplatt...
sorry for the aside...
Marion,
the texture suits the decay - the meatiness of all things that die - carnal nature blah, blah, blah...
However, I would argue that in this shot (given the weight and tone of the image) the shadow is a distraction - the shadows work in your lighter images but I am not sure they work here.
Perhaps it should emerge from darkness.

The main characteristic of the calla flower is lost with this low key lighting. The texture looks like a peace of meet, ruther than a flower. Maybe that was the intention? Of course it's subjective, but this approach didn't work for me. Have you had a chance to study Robert Malperthorpe's callas? Those are the best photos of callas I've seen. They show the gentile whiteness and sculpturness of this beautiful flower.
