About
Accessable by a high clearance vehicle or 4x4 road, this scenic section of the S. Yuba River located near the town of Washington, CA was once the location of a town named Ormonde which today is a public area called Golden Quartz Picnic/Day Use area. Back in the mid 1800's, during the California Gold Rush, this area was heavily mined. The gravels were removed by miners to expose the bedrock below and all the gold deposits. The area is still popular among recreational gold prospectors.
A plaque at this location reads:
ORMONDE
THE TOWN OF ORMONDE WAS ESTABLISHED HERE IN 1887. DOWNSTREAM, ACROSS THE MOUTH OF CANYON CREEK WAS CANYONVILLE 1850, AND UPRIVER APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES WAS MAYBERT 1886. THESE TOWNS WERE PART OF THE UPPER WASHINGTON MINING DISTRICT AND WERE THE FURTHEST UPSTREAM OF THE SERIOUS MINING VENTURES ALONG THE SOUTH YUBA. DURING ITS BRIEF HISTORY THE DISTRICT YIELDED 17 MILLION DOLLARS IN GOLD, BUT BY 1897 IT WAS NEARLY TOTALLY ABANDONED. THE REMAINS HAVE SINCE BEEN OBLITERATED BY FLOODING.
Another excellent and informative 'about' Brigitte. Beautiful clear water giving great clarity of the boulders on the bed. Again a lovely sense of peacefulness from this delightful scene. Well done again sweetie. All the very best......Ray
Thank you Stan for the nice comments, suggestion and continued support. I just uploaded another shot from this incredible place... a couple feet downstream from this location without the sky. Have a wonderful weekend... :-)
Great info and some impressive boulders in the water. I think a crop off the top to bring in the creek and less hills. Nice details in the creek. My best, Stan
