Pat, I was thinking of a birding lens like the 500 or 600mm f/4 in comparison. I feel that there is no substitude for that kind of optics - and you will still need a blind to get close! Your portable blind idea is good, 'though. Have you found a good source? Eb

I don't consider your lens options crappy. I have been toying with the idea of building a simple blind to get me closer to the wildlife without having to us my TC's. I also have looked at an aluminum framed "realtree camo" portable blind.
Good luck.

Yes Pat, you are right, but I can't do that! I am using my 300mm. with a TC-17. So that gives me 510mm at f/6.8 and then I need to stop down to, at least, f/8 or f/11 to get the sharpness. Or I am using the 80-400, which is also needs f/8 - f/11. That's what happens when you have crappy telephoto equipment! Eb

Eb - Nice sharpness, reflections and composition. Just an idea - if you open up the aperture to say f5.6 and focus on the duck, the reflections will blend together nicely (just from my duck picture experience). It makes a muddled background.
