About I don't know why some of these Ice bergs glow like this when it is over cast but it is impressive to experience and just as hard to believe in real. I was told it depends on the age of the ice and how much air is left in it after thousands of years of compression. The older it is the less air and the more they glow.
You also might want to consider that what you see above the water is only one tenth of the total mass below. This one is about 30 feet or 10 meters along the water line.

I am also writing a blog on the trip for www.acdsee.com the photo software company if you are interested in checking it out. It is still in process I am adding more everyday.

This reminds me of a moment in Iceland! It feels like one is actually "flowing" physically into a canvas, if you know what I mean :)

http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215022/fish.htm, I think it is a fish. Take a look and compare. In any event, great photo. Congrats & Happy New Year.

Hi Carla,

Not to sure what that is really i knoticed that as well before posting...a great mystery....Can't say we saw many fish at all despite being in Zodiacs a lot. I guess all the penguins and leopard seals keep them sparse.

Hi Eb,

No i did not desaturate...if anything i usually go the other way as you might guess. But in this case it is pretty much the way it was. A little earlier in the day the sky was yellowish but the sun is a little higher here and we lost that wonderful contrast of warm and cool lighting

Beautiful, Tim! Did you desaturate the background?

An almost magical appearance of the glowing 'berg against the monochromatic background of the overcast sky and snow, ice and rocks, Tim! What a great series on Antarctica!
Dave.

Interesting information. The glow is wonderful, as is the overcast grey sky. Do I see a fish swimming toward you right at the 2/3 and 3/3 line (near the hole in the ice) of the image? It is just outside of the blue glow.
