Hi Avi,
This one was taken a year ago last July. I took it from the same place as my last two images posted. It is what you would see if you looked ninety degrees to the right of my image called 8:15am.

Thanks a lot Paul.
Sometimes "simple" can be quite effective. I like that some people have commented that they have had to look deep into the image to find the subtle detail. I find fog and mist very attractive in images myself.

Thanks Kes,
This is the same place that I took the "birdman" shots from. A completely different angle and time of day, of course.
He wasn't around when I took this one :)

Hi Andre,
This is a great morning shot (a dam fine shot) with excellent use of reflected light on water for balance.

Of course we get lucky sometimes, Andre! It's only that I would really like to know what brought that luck to me, to have... *one* good shot of the fog after so many years! ;-)

That very fine mist is another thing to think of. Most of the time our built-in visual processing elimitaes it and make us think that the air is completely clear where it is not. No PS filtering, just BS! (Brainshop! ;-)) If somebody has luck then, some very nice shots van be made.

Cheers,

Nick

Hey Nick,
Sometimes we just get lucky too!
I find sometimes the nicest fog or mist scenes are the ones where there is just a very fine mist that we don't really register in our minds eye when taking the shot.

Oh well, Andre, don't get too frustrated about the missed opportunity. The suit is still there and there will be moren than enough foggy days! ;-)

Your suspicion abot the monsters and other "proofs of their existence" is quite right. It seems that somehow all those monsters signed a contract with the photographers to appear only under such weather conditions. :-)

But seriously now, indeed the fog is quite hard to get right. I did get fooled many times to believe "now I have it!" but at the end it was not really the look of the fog but a rather noisy thing that didn't represent at all what was goinf on. I guess it is the fine balance of dimmed colors and softened contours that makes it so hard, but still I don't have many clues about that. Sometimes underexposure will help, and some other times overexposure will help, and still I am searching for some kind of "method" to predict how to set up the camera.

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Nick,
Now you have me thinking about some missed opportunity that I might have had, to get all dressed up in my birdman suit and freeze my butt off at 5:30 in the morning. It might have looked good too :)
I bet most of those Loch Ness Monster images were taken in deep fog like this. Not to mention Werewolves on the moors.

Fog is a strange thing to photograph. The images can sometimes be very difficult to get right due to the diffusion. There is a fine line between getting a nice soft, diffused look and something that might come out looking like just a photo with a lot of "noise" in it.

Hi Andrzej,
Yes for sure... all that natural diffusion from the fog makes things very delicate indeed. It's almost like putting a thick gauze filter over a daylight image. You can't even make anything out in the thumbnail :)

Perhaps it is only because I did expect some continuation of your last two images, Andre, but do I recognize some vague similarity to them? I still expect some kind of "creature" to appear in the shallow waters, not caring for my own surprise and simply do what it has to do in that rather... surreal atmosphere?

But purely technically spoken, you really managed to captured that very dirty and difficualt thing called "foggy atmosphere" extremelly well. And despite the complexity of the shapoes (trees, mounts, etc) there is also some kind of simplicity presend when I consider the almost B&W scene with the those orange strokes as the only exception.

I really look and look again and wait for aotner appearance of that... bird-man, or man-brd, or whatever that might had been. Like somebody that saw something somewhere and keeps on returning, waiting perhaos for ever in order to see that again.

Best wishes,

Nick

Thank you Andrzej,
From the detail in your comment, I can see that you appreciate this time of day the same as I do. You mention the darkness and calmness. I'm attaching an image that was taken about 10 minutes after this one. I had finished my coffee by then and got into my kayak and started paddling off in the opposite direction to this image, The front of my green kayak and the end of my fishing rod can be made out if you look hard enough in the left bottom of the image. The sky is just starting to get some blue in the top right. There is also a very subtle tree line if you look hard enough.

Andre, 5:45 am on a cold morning is a good bet for a nice pictures of the lake and river. The one shows the charm and mystery of the calm and mist blurred scenery. The only sounds one can hear are made by nature, the only smell is cold dump haze mixed with the scent of the lake and forest. Dawn plays the sky and breaks through the patches of mist. Should I really tell you that? I know you know. I like the darkness here, gives the feel of thrill and sensation. Cheers, NJ

I think it was probably the best of a few that I took that morning. The others seemed to have either too little or too much sun.

Thanks for the comment and visit Brigette.
I almost put it in the new hot, hot, hot project for the very reason you mentioned. But, it really didn't feel that warm in the cool mist.
Thanks again.

Andre, this is a very beautiful scene. The sun rising looks almost like a flame from a fire (guess it is a fireball isn't it? lol) and the fog looks like smoke from the fire... a very special image! Superb photography!! 7+++ Best regards, Brigitte

Thanks Dave,
I took several shots that morning... this one seemed to work out best because the sun wasn't too far up yet. Only a minute later and the sun starts to look a little burned out.
