Wow Todd! Great find and the composition really sings in this one. Interesting critique string.
I'm with Mary . . . you're doing excellent work in adverse conditions (re: lighting) and I think you're more than right about not altering too much for fear of a fake looking result. Shadows and Highlights, midtones and gammas can cause halos if changed too drastically.
Today's photographers need a good balance of photographic skill and editing skill. While better skill in photography enables you to do good work without having mastered the editing process, the reverse simply is not true. I think you're clearly doing it the right way.
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~

Geoff,
Aha! Now I know what you're talking about. In PhotoStudio it's called tone. I did do that but stopped too soon I guess. Cool. Thanks all for your great comments.

:) Some programs are very intense and not user friendly (and very powerful)
Other software can be limited but good at a couple of things.
If an image looks flat or washed out check the highlites and lowlites. How dark is the darkest spot? How bright is the brightest?
When looking at shadows there should be details inside of it, it shouldn't be large areas of flat black. Bright spots should also retain detail.
I try not alter colour. I also do as little as I can, less is more usually :)

This is such a great scene--a wonderful capture. I see what Geoff did with it. It would be nice to understand and know how to effectively use gamma and colours variances and those things. However, Todd, you have been enjoying this hobby for only two years. Consider how much you have accomplished in that short time. Just imagine what you'll learn in the next couple of years and the results you'll be producing. MAry

OOPS!
Sorry, Geoff. I didn't see the picture you posted when I read your comment. They don't show up under "Critiques to me" where I read my messages. Please disregard my last post.
I see what you mean. A subtle but nice differrence. I'll play around with my PhotoStudio and see what I can do. Thanks for the tips.

Geoff,
Please feel free to down load a copy and show me what I might be able to do. I enjoy seeing other people's interpretations, especially with exposure and low light. I'm not always sure when to stop.

Sometimes it depends on your software, I've been playing with ACDSee 9 photo manager.
On it I adjusted under brightness; gamma downwards, and contrast upwards (slightly) then under levels I nudge the shadows upwards a fraction and midtones down the tiniest of bits.

A great collection there, Todd! Your PS work is just fine to show the details, even if it's not perfect, you can't always get that in these situations. Dave.

Geoff,
Thanks for your constructive criticism. I've been fighting with backlit subjects ever since I started doing this two years ago. I often lament my editing skills and admit I just don't know enough about light/colour/art to excel at a creative hobby. It's like someone who can play an instrument, but can't read music. I have done exactly what you suggested. It was even worse before I started. I find that it only makes a photo look fake if you try to save something that's too far gone. I might tend to go the other way with this. Maybe turn it into a charcoal render or just desaturate it enough to make them into silhouettes.
Thanks for stopping by.

Very nice composition, Too bad the lighting was working against you. Try to adjust either the contrast (slightly) and/or the gamma/lowlites so that your colours/shadows are a touch more vibrant. Still it's a great image, congrats on finding such an interesting subject
